Brake replacement

Curious when everyone has had to replace their brakes? What mileage on your X7. Specifically curious about M brakes.

I had all pads and rotors replaced on my wife's X7 M50 at around 30k miles. I bought the upgraded maintenance plan for about $800 so it covered the roughly $1,500 that they wanted to do the service.

Actual brake life is going to depend heavily on how the vehicle is driven.

'21 X7 M50 at 60K, still original pads and rotors. I hear a bit of squeal, but not sure if it's the wear indicator or the usual one with these pads. I know the rear are getting low, but fronts are still about half life. (lots of highway miles)

$1500 for all pads and rotors is pretty cheap. Most dealers want $1500 for one axel.

Absolutely true! So how is everyone driving that causes brakes to be toasted in 30K? Pads start with 12mm and need replacement at 3mm. I haven't driven enough miles on my X7 to have any measurable wear, but I'm approaching 20K miles on my G550 and the pads are at 10mm on all 4 corners.

$1500 is a good deal for just the parts -- 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads.

I seriously I doubt they replaced pads and rotors for that amount. Are you sure about that? It’s typical for the maintenance plan to pay only for pads if the rotors are still good.

I dunno. What ever it is they quoted, it was way more than the $800 cost of the maintenance upgrade.

I purchased the $800 maintenance plan as well, and am at about 22k miles, so want to make sure I need my brakes replaced before the 36k mile mark. $1,500 does seem cheap though, I recall on previous vehicles I've owned that the front alone usually costs about $1,500.

i suspect the reason the maint upgrade for the initial term to include brakes is so reasonable is that bmw knows most people wont actually wear out the brakes before 36k miles.

This isn't to extend the maintenance plan, this is to have it cover 'consumables' like brake pads, rotors, etc during the first 3 years. Make sure you are comparing the same products. Also, keep in mind that dealers can tack on their own profit or discount how ever they would like so prices won't be the same everywhere. You don't need to buy the plan from the same dealership you got your car, so shop around for a better deal. I've done over 20 new cars with my local dealer and have a pretty good relationship. We either agree on a number or we don't, but I don't spend hours/days/weeks trying to get to a rock bottom price.

I bought the extended plan at the end of last year and it was right around $800 for my wife's '20 X7. I took delivery of my '24 X7 in August and the cost of the maintenance plan had increased to about $1,400. I questioned the change, but was not surprised.

the other thing about the consumables add on is most people wont need new rotors and pads within the first three years. thats why they price it so reasonably. thats also why theres a huge jump to add another year, you're alot more likely to need rotors and pads in year 4 than in the first 3 years. i would wager that most people that buy the 3 year add on will end up with 3 sets of wiper blades and thats it.

i did a deep dive into brake parts, also just swapped my pads for brembo (oe mfr) ceramic pads. OE parts are about ~1200 (brembo rotors and pads, either ceramic or semi met) for a full setup.

Rockauto.com has the best prices. I got the set of brembo ceramic pads for about 200 before tax and shipping, list price was about 350.

My 2021 X7 xDrive40i just had its 50,000-mile service. The pads have 9mm. I think 90% of the miles are on the highway.

Rockauto has always been awesome! Would you mind sharing the brakes you bought? I have a ‘24 and no Brembos show until I get to ‘22. If I remember correctly you had a LCI X7 with the M brakes so I’m guessing the same fit as mine.

yup, lci 40i with Msport brakes.
the M50i/60I use the same front, but different rear.

P/N:
F:P06106N
R: P06101N

i did a cross check with the bmw part numbers, they are the same from prelci to lci so figured the brembos for the prelci would fit. i just selected the 2020 and used that. looking at my receipt, i selected the M50i for the front brakes, and the 40i for the rear. i cant remember if its because the front pads didnt show up for the 40i, but either way, just make sure the p/ns come up.
