DP on F80 and Passing Smog

I was wondering for the folks on F80 m3 and using downpipe, how do you manager your inspection every 2 yrs?

I am tired of the OEM sound and wanted something more aggressive and deep, planning to just install a DP and keep the stock setup... but then the smog inspection concerns me.

Any advice or feedback

Won’t pass the visual inspection even if you had a O2 spacer.

Or you can do what I did. Research just switching out the midpipe to get the sound you want.

I went with Active Autowerke Equal Length midpipe so I kept my stock cats and do not have to tune and worry about them catching that too when they scan.

Im in love with the sound and think it sounds perfect. And have no plans to change until maybe I get bored in a couple years and decide to go catted DP and get bm3 tune. But so far great sound and the power is more than enough for me.

I got flagged for my mid pipe as my the mid pipe removed the secondary cats and I still had my oem cats. So not sure if all shops are the same but I went to local one here in Ontario/Chino area.

You coooould get lucky and the SMOG tech misses/ignores the midpipe.
The chances of that are slim and you might as well just swap out the midpipe to save yourself the hassle. You may even have to pay to retest depending on the spot.

Just pay to have it swapped every two years. You will never pass with a downpipe unless you pay up.

Still illegal, since you remove the secondary cats. I have failed due to smog guy looking underneath the car.

I am going to head to some car meets and hopefully talk to some people who dont have stringent dudes like you had to deal with. Just check my downpipes and hopefully leave the underside of my car alone. Lol. But switching midpipes are way easier than downpipes.

Just stating facts. No need to get defensive.

If you're smog guy is removing the skid plate to do an inspection find a new smog guy. Those bolts are one time use too lol. I've passed 2 smogs at two different shops with dp/mid pipes and o2 spacers. Imo reverting the tune is the hardest part of smog.

Are you catless? I’d be surprised if you’re legit passing catless.

You must be the luckiest guy ever, you can literally see the o2 spacers and downpipes from the top, if you are in SoCal can you DM me your smog shop. I had to remove my DP back in December to pass.

So am I. Stating the fact that if you did a little research to find a place that isn’t looking under your car then you would have been fine. Also stated the fact that changing your midpipe is easier than downpipes.

You did have a point that removing the secondary cats is illegal in CA so kudos bro!

I have ARM highflow cats, but you can still smell a little unburnt fuel. Maybe I did just get lucky, but I followed the guide from the smog thread and passed. I'd imagine 2 sets of spacers would work for catless.

Huh? spacers go on the downstream sensors. Theres no way to see them from the top. You need to remove trim and the skid plate to get at them.

I am running this mid pipe with sport cats to see what happens and if I pass smog, if not then oem mid pipe will do.

It’s made by scorpion exhaust which I think are based out of the UK.
