Question B58: Tell-tale signs of an oil pump about to go bad?

Forum
Looking for a little help, I've read a lot here and there about failing oil pumps on the B58 platform as they age. And it seems like it is becoming increasingly common.

I like to check my oil in idrive fairly regularly. And recently as I've been performing a check, the check progresses to about 20% complete and then aborts and stalls out

Put a call into my tuner and they told me it's very common (unfortunately) and it is likely the pump or sensor going bad. So sigh off to the dealer I'll go but in the meantime anyone have the same symptoms?

TIA

From what I understand, the 20% oil progress thing is more related to a sensor and not the pump itself. How many miles do you have on yours?

Check your oil pressure, if you regularly get 100+ psi on throttle then definitely change it. Oil pressure should at full throttle be around 70-80 psi and at idle 30-40 psi.

It seems this issue is prevalent on 2020 models only, based on what I’ve anecdotally seen online.

On my 2020, i had the same issue where it would quit at about 18%, as someone else stated. It was the sensor, rather then the oil pump itself. However. BMW ended up changing all of it out incase it was the pump.

On my 2020, they tried just replacing the sensor but it apparently still wouldn't go past 18 - 20%, so they replaced the pump also.

I have a 2/20 build date and have never had a issue checking oil level hot or cold. I also have the brake assist recall which looks like it's relating to the oil pump which I also have not completed since my DME is unlocked and I am tuned. Will check codes and see if any come up for the pressure being too high or low. Car is at 55K miles and out of warranty, been using 0W-30 majority of its life.
