You're really just splitting hairs with both these cars. But given what I've seen from both BMW and Mercedes lately, I'll give the edge to BMW when it comes to interior material quality. It seems like all GLS' are shipped to dealers with MB-Tex. BMW wouldn't dare even offer Sensatec an option on the X7. Then there's some of the plastics in Merc cabins...
Could be worse, I sat in an $80k Audi Q8 with plastics up and down the door panel and super cheap feeling leather. Not too mention all the plastics were very VW Jetta-esque, Audi has some great interior designs (except for the new double touchscreen) but interior materials are far behind BMW and Mercedes.
Until recently Audi set the bench mark for luxury interiors. I always thought BMW and MB were lagging behind. I feel with the new x5 and X7 interior for the 1st BMW has surpassed Audi. I still put Audi ahead of MB the new large IPADish dash is not a good look.

My X7 interior is nicer than my Q7 interior for sure.

I prefer the X7 over the new GLS and my wife's 2018 over this new 2020 model.

This is my favorite SUV. Understated until you hear the rumble ... also like the interior space. They softened the new one up a lot which is disappointing. Maybe with the full AMG pkg it'll look a little more mean. I hope so.

Rear end reminds me of the Infiniti body language. We refer to the infinity as the "gup-truck" as it looks like something from octonauts (it you don't have young kids ... it looks like a submarine)

GLS looks a lot better. But that isn’t saying much since the X7 is butt ugly.

Would like to see some real photos, since these are just leaks.

This! The new Benz interiors with the 40ft long horizontal iPad looks absolutely awful. And those vents...good lord. I almost cried the first time I saw one in person in an E63. The car drove like a bat outta hell, but couldnt get over the interior. Voiced similar opinions in the Private Lounge. :

Agreed on the outside, especially the white for the X7/MB and the grey MB.

Wait... is this really what the new MB dash looks like? Yuck. Four airvents in a row all next to each other, underneath a horizontal skateboard-sized display?

No thanks.

To be fair, I have a friend that says he's seen the new MB dashes in person, and they look good, so I'll reevaluate when I see one in person.

BMW interior still looks like a car interior, MB interior looks like TV stand with tiny TV and steering wheel.

That was my first reaction with the rear end as well - Infiniti body language.

But it’s called “Octonauts” - get your kids’ show straight! lol

Overall your statement has some degree of truth, but is over-generalized. There are some GLEs that handle better than some X5s, and vice-versa.
I agree that mine was a general statement. I had to drive an x5 e40 (?) for two months last summer as a loaner and hated the way it drove. I also had an x6 3.5 loaner last week and although it drove better I still thought it was floaty. I guess I am used to the more solid handling that an x6M (both current and previous generation offer). I did compare my previous x6 5.0 to GLE 550 with most options and they just couldn't have been more different in terms of driving dynamics. I actually felt less safe driving relatively fast in the MB.

I prefer my 2016 GL550 over this new one. I’ve had two GL’s, and I’ve always been a MB fan. Between my husband and I, we’ve had six Mercedes, including two AMG’s, but we’ve been so disappointed in their styling in the last few years. Even though I have my 50i on order, I’ve been so nervous about the 2020 GLS — I was secretly afraid I’d end up liking it better when it was revealed. So I’m breathing a sigh of relief this week. This new one is nowhere near as sleek as the X7. The front is barely any different from what it’s been for a decade, and the rear looks very similar to the X7, but it misses the mark somewhere. Even my upgraded Designo interior on my current GL isn’t as plush as the Individual interior I have coming. I am happy to see that MB is finally putting captains chairs as an option for the 2nd row — that was honestly my biggest reason for jumping ship.

GLS overall looks are plain to me. MB has usually been for the older individual mentality when it comes to their vehicles.

I agree with your assessment of the new GLS. I owned a MY14 GL 550, a MY15 GL 550, and most recently a loaded MY17 GLS 550 (Active Curve, designo leather, etc.) that we were going to trade on an ordered GLE 450 but when the first of the GLE's showed up at dealerships I was underwhelmed. I wasn't planning on buying the X7 but when I saw it for the first time and then drove it, I just had to have one. So we canceled our GLE order and bought a X7 xDrive 50i off the showroom floor. We love it (so far) and find it much more exciting to drive.

When the first pics of the GLS began posting a few days ago, like you, I was relieved that I made the right choice. I think it's nice looking and an improvement over the previous generation but it too is a bit underwhelming, especially the interior which to me needs more pop. But Mercedes makes a great SUV and looks are subjective. So if someone would rather spend their hard-earned money on GLS, to each his own. In the end how does their buying a GLS affect you one way or the other?

The BMW is crisp, taught, fit looking while the Mercedes looks a bit bloated, round and soft in comparison. This assessment, to my eye, reflects both the exterior and interior design. I am not a fan of the two tone interior of the BMW, but one need not choose that configuration.

I definitely like the X7 exterior but I'm a fan on the single display/info screen on the MB. With that said, it looks like it isn't integrated into the dash and has a bezel on the top by the driver. Basically, if it looks like the Porsche Panamera I'm sold, that is a good integration of a skateboard iPad. I don't even mind the 4 dash vents. Motor options, I like the 6 and 8 options BMW has.
