I thought I read somewhere that in order to operate the roof from the fob, you need Comfort Access...?
Can anyone confirm if this is the case with the 3 series cabrio...

"The retractable roof may be operated either by a switch in the center console or by remote control key fob when equipped with optional Comfort Access. Comfort Access also allows convenient loading and unloading of the luggage compartment with the roof open. To provide access to the luggage compartment in this case, the open hardtop is moved to an interim position facilitating the removal of large objects." |

Start button is not the same as comfort access though.
Yes, the Z4 does have comfort access, but even cars without it will still have the push button start. Comfort access takes that a step further and does not require the key to be inserted into the slot in the dash prior to start. It also of course allows entry to the car without using the key fob buttons and a few other things as discussed in this thread. |

This is indeed the case for the 3 series and M3 cab, and is now also true for the new Z4 as well. However, there is also a relatively inexpensive ($300) add on called "Smart TOP" that will allow you to do the same thing. In fact, it not only adds the ability to open and close the top from the remote, but adds the ability to do so with a simple extended-click or double-click, instead of holding the button for the whole procedure. And this goes for both the fob and for the switch in the car on the console.
