Where/how to program garage door opener?! (new to BMW)
Hi all,
2024 X5 xdrive50e. Sorry if this is a super basic question. I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to figure out where in the infotainment system i am supposed to go to program the opening/closing of my garage doors so my wife doesn't have to use the remote. I searched the PDF of the manual, but i cannot seem to find it anywhere. Am i just blind? I have to imagine this functionality is included? Maybe it's a separate option that we didn't get? Can someone point this newbie in the right direction? |

The programming does not happen in the x5 but rather in the electronics of your existing opening device. You will have to look into your central opener unit, where you will usually find a button for programming purposes (always depending on the make you have). Once you press it, you have a specified amount of time to press your chosen button on the mirror in the x5 to connect.
You will have to look this up in your garage opener, however, as your x5 only works as a remote control, but not as the “programming device”. |

Ah ok, so there are buttons on the mirror that you teach. It's similar to my Audi, then, except the Audi walks you through the process in the infotainment. Just seems bizarre there is zero documentation of this feature in the manual. Thank you!

Thank you again, Niehms. was able to get them programmed. Looks like only 3 buttons though. we have four garage doors. Not a big deal, but because the audi has software buttons for this function you aren't limited to a set number of physical buttons. But it's working great and was easier to get programmed than my car.

This link walks you through programming the garage door opener in your bmw. I just followed it and it worked for my new car.

Yeah, got home with a new X5 and trying to program the Homelink and there is no mention of Homelink or garage door in the owners manual! WTF, every car I’ve owned w/ HL has had instructions in the manual on how to program it! Bizarre

There used to be a small additional manual that covered some stuff…have you looked in your documentation package if it isn’t in the main manual?
Basically, you first teach the vehicle from an existing remote, then you tell the opener to recognize that new remote by putting the opener into learn mode. |

yea, it’s odd the instructions were removed from the 50e’s owner’s manual. this was noticed last year after its release. below are from my 45e manual (might be the same procedure)

All of the many years and all the many cars I've had with this capability I have never done this. That may change now...

Several things to do many may not remember when selling your vehicle:
- delete your phone and contact list(s) - reset/clear the programming for your garage door and HomeLink - reset your stored NAV points of interest There’s a reset function in idrive, but double-check all of the personal information that might be stored in your rolling computer just to be sure it’s gone. |

I had the same problem with other new vehicles. Not just BMWs. I wound up getting one of these which solved the problem for all of my vehicles. http://www.homelinkestore.com/Produc...ridge-Kit.html
