Complete M suspension project
I converted my 135i to complete 1M suspension setup late last summer and thought I'd share some picture.
Complete 1M suspension, using entire rear axle, front uprights and steering rack Plus I hard mounted the rear subframe and installed 1M Ohlins I don't know how to make a proper thread but the pictures can be found here http://s240.photobucket.com/user/Griff50078/story |

I went through the pictures, and that's some seriously impressive work! Can you go into some detail about the build? How long it took, what was your inspiration, any setbacks during installation/tear down, etc...and I might have missed them but I didn't see any final build pics, although I did see a nice GTR...any details on that beauty?

Holy shit man.... That looks like it took some time! Kudos to you for taking all those pictures too.
I would love to do something like this, I just don't have the balls. I'd end up fucking something up probably. |

Great work Griff! The most worrying picture to me was the corrosion on the rear floorpan. Was that around the suspension mounting points? And was it as bad as it looks?

Nicely done! I know what a pain in the ass it is to do on jackstands, lying on the ground. Looks like you had the added bonus of rusted components as well, lol.

Wow! I want to do this to my wagon so bad, you have no idea. Did you buy a whole donor car? Where did the subframes/knuckles/etc come from? Were you able to get the 1M/M3 steering rack's servotronic function working? I've heard that if you don't, the steering is really really heavy.
Also, props to you for re-coating the bottom of the car! It looks like there was pretty substantial corrosion on your car, I guess they like to use a lot of salt where you are. With that said, it looks like the brakes are a bit of a downgrade. You went from forged monoblocks to cast single pistons. Is the performance better on the new brakes? |

rothwem not all M3 steering racks are servotronic. Also, in stock form those 135i brakes are shit. Small. Melting caliper Pistons. If they were superior BMW would have put them on the M cars. Naturally they didn't. For a reason.

And that's really surprising about the 135 brakes! I remember when the 135 came out, everyone was rushing to get them on their E90s. I was definitely scheming on how to get a set on my old E90. Bummer that they're not as awesome as they were originally hyped to be. |

Thanks for the feedback guys
It took 2 weeks of very long days (I'd taken time off work because it was my wife's due date for our baby girl, but she came late so I used the time to work on the car!) I bought the complete rear axle off a 1 year old, low mileage M3 that had front damage The front uprights and steering were from a nearly new 1M with rear damage All other parts were new I've had the donor parts in storage for 4 years, they were supposed to be fitted to my previous 135i but that was stolen so the project was delayed somewhat! I've always wanted a set of Ohlins dampers and they haven't disappointed The inspiration was from the 1M, I drove one back to back with a 135i some years ago and the difference in character from the chassis alone was huge - my plan was to mimic this and go a little further :-) Set backs during the build - god where do I start! The rear end was fine, actually quite good fun but working in the engine bay of these things isn't something I enjoy! Plus I had a deadline to get the car back in the road (daily driver) and a baby popped out a couple of days before I'd finished! The GTR was fantastic, I should've kept hold of it. I have TVR Griffith (rebuild here http://www.acs-pro.de/7_10.html) and a Renault 5 Turbo to keep me busy. |
