Tire store in NYC?
I am thinking about ordering a set of Kumho ASX from Tire Rack (225/40/18 and 255/35/18) but the 255 are back ordered and am wondering if anybody knows any good tire stores in NYC that sells them at comparable prices?

YMMV but I have had a few really bad experiences at Action Tire. Way back when, I went to get a set of S-03s for my e36, called in advance and they said they had 225/45/17. I made the 1.5 hour drive in rush hour from the city. When I got there, I gave them the car and waited an hour. Then, they put the hard sell on me to convince me that 205/50/17 was just as good as 225/45/17 because that was the size they actually had. I said that was too narrow and I didn't want that size, but it turns out they had mounted the 205s on my wheels anyway without asking me. When I asked them to put my old tires back on, they said that the tires were bald and they couldn't ethically remount them (this is partially true, the tires were pretty worn). At the end of the day, because I was trapped without tires and couldn't leave, I ended up with a set of crap Falkens, the only tires they had in my size, and they charged me a terrible price for them.
I've had much better luck at Costco and Sears, where you pay more, but at least you get what you pay for in terms of customer service and accountability. I wouldn't let Action Tire touch my cars ever again. If I were you, I would go to a quality independent like motorwerks west in Wykoff, NJ, Autobahn Service Center uptown on 91st St (Willy is the head mechanic's name, he's German, and knows exactly what he's doing), or The Little Garage on Long Island. They will respect your car, do everything to factory specs, and will not screw you.

If you are willing to take a little ride, Precision Tire on Rt. 17 S in Ridgewood is excellent and has good pricing on things. Guys at Rogue Eng. use them. (they recently patched a tire on my car, excellent service)

I am thinking of just going with another brand of tires, order them online and bring them to be mounted and balanced. Do places like Sears do mounting and balancing well or do they suck?

Go to Tirerack and do a search for certified installers in your area. That's how I found my local independent "tire guy" and I've been very happy with him. Sears is a crap-shoot, just like all the chains. You might do fine, but you might be sorry... it all depends on the specific person that works on your stuff. Tirerack certified installers must meet certain minimum criteria to be "certified" by Tirerack. Keep in mind, though, that nothing in this world is a sure bet.

I once went to Ganin tire in Brooklyn, to have them mount my snows. They are a tirerack certified installer and did an okay job, but it was a shady looking place. Now that tirerack has survey results and "Price Pledge Plus" rated installers, their recommendations may be more reliable. I note that Ganin Tire is listed, but isn't one of their preferred vendors.
By the way, Rich, are you still going for a 335?
