Anyone else getting a little irritated at iDrive???
Hey, just wondering, is anyone else having problems with their iDrive? I noticed every once in a while my iDrive starts acting up, but only about two times since I bought the car..until now. Now this week, I went to show my friend the car (who hadn't seen it yet) and the first thing he wanted to see was the navigation. Needless to say, when I went to slide the joystick to the right for navigation, the system jammed and nothing happened, except the navigation window was highlighted green. I ejected the navi DVD but nothing. I even turned off the car and tried to turn it back on again, but it wouldn't work. What a first impression, huh?
It started working when I left his house (this was on Sunday). But now today, I'm coming home from the pet store and I can't get past the "accept" screen. The time, date, and sound icons at the bottom are all "blanked out" and no matter how hard I tried, the system would not "accept". During this jam, the whole system stopped...the CD wouldn't even play. Is there a reset for this other than turning off the car and turning it back on again? I pressed in the volume knob for a few seconds...nothing. I can't imagine pulling off to the side of the road and stopping/starting everytime this happens, which seems to be a little more frequent lately. Like I said, it was acting up a little in the first months I had the car, but now it seems like it's a roulette game whether or not it will work. I love the system, but now I'm starting to wonder if it was worth $2000, being that I can't even listen to my CDs or the radio if this system fails to load. Can anyone help? |

I haven't had a problem like this yet. Have BMW service take a look at iDrive.

There is a way to "reboot" the iDrive system which I think will most likely fix your problems. Unfortunately, I don't remember the button combo, but I know it involves 3 buttons, 2 of which are the CD eject and the DVD eject. Anyone else know??

I had an '05 745i and one of the main reasons I had to part ways with it was that freakin' iDrive. It's not that it's complicated, I just couldn't stand it's sluggishnish, and having to weave my way though it to do such simple tasks as turning off tracktion controll. It crashed on me more than a few times. My biggest pet peeve with it was the FM tuner within - it needed a signal of perfection in order to preform in stereo, otherwise it defaulted to mono (which was 90% of the time, and I live in an urban center!).
While the 745i was way to big for my liking, the size of the 545i/550i is perfect, however you can't nix that iDrive out of it. E90, here I come - without iDrive! Alex. |

I test drove an e90 with nav/iDrive. Noticed the same issues I had on the 745i. Sluggishnish moving between functions, crappy FM tuner always defaluting to mono. I love toys, really I do, but I couldn't stand that iDrive.

"In order to reset the Nav and I-Drive do the following at the same time. Press down and hold: volume control knob, cd eject button, and DVD eject button." ...from another post I found. I would be interested to find out if this fixes the problem. Good luck!

Mine has been flawless....unlike my 545 which needed 2 software patches/upgrades.
The 3 button combo to reboot I-Drive is 1. Audio on-off-volume button on dash 2. CD Eject button 3. DVD eject button Push them all at the same time.

Hey thank's guys I guess that's what I was really looking for--a ctrl+alt+del kind of reset procedure (or in this case vol+dvd ejct+cd ejct). Next time it happens, I'll try this and let you guys know what I find out.
It's a shame this happens because I really love the whole system. Sure it takes a while to learn, and I totally agree that it is kind of slow at times (sometimes irritatingly slow) but I really like it. It just makes me wonder if this is actually hardware problems, or if they can be fixed via the highly anticipated september software update. Well thanks again. |

My idrive has been pretty solid
but I think it crashed once. One day I was using it and It just froze up , the screen went black, and it restarted Thats been my only major problem. Ive also noticed that youvve got to wait a while after starting the car and getting passed the acceptance screen to use it or else it lags a bit thats what Ive noticed when I try to really quickly get to the nav menu or communication menus when i first get in the car I still love the e90 idrive compared to the 745s and genuinly like it |
