I got a 2020 X7 xDrive40i. It has software version 07/2021.585.

I was expecting that the Apple Maps will display in the HUD while using the CarPlay. But it isn't displaying in the HUD.

Do I have to change anything in the iDrive settings? Am I missing anything?

Yes. It might be on “reduced HUD” display mode. Search in the settings under HUD or drive assist menus. If you can’t find it, let me know and I’ll check it out for u.

The reduced display mode for HUD is unchecked.

I thought Carplay and Android Auto maps will not be displayed on HUD. It only shows the directions and turns. Is that incorrect?
Is there a possibility for those to show similar to vehicle maps on HUD?

This is my understanding as well. I don't recall seeing it on my 2023 either, but I haven't explicitly tested. Similarly, my Volvo HUD only works if using the built-in NAV, not CarPlay.

I've found the 23 BMW maps/nav to work great. Traffic is from Google, it's fast, easy to search, pulls right from my phone calendar, augmented reality view and HUD. I'm using it almost exclusively which is a first for me in any car.

I can see the Apple Map in the HUD of my 2019 and 2022 X7s (It is more of directions when driving straight, but I also see the roads split as am approaching an exit, and I also see the circle as am taking one, and it also displays the cross-road as am approaching one.

How would it know what to show if you aren't using navigation? It won't suggest a turn if it doesn't know where you're gone?

Correct. HUD only syncs and reads from Apple Maps. It won’t sync with google maps or other apps. However, the instrument cluster would would (show directions) with any app, but the HUD strictly works to show directions when Apple Maps are used and when navigation/destination is on.

Thanks, I only tried Google Maps so hence my comment that I didn't see the HUD working, thanks for confirming.

Apple maps will appear on HUD when using an iPhone but not any other map app. When using an Android, both Google maps and Waze will appear on the HUD. I know this because I have an Android and my wife has an iPhone.
