Manually. Leave your headlights on Auto, hit the fogs - which will activate both.

Don't use them unless there are fogs. These lights dazzle oncoming cars and provide no additional lighting beyond your headlights.

Exactly. You don't want to be "that guy".

They do not dazzle anyone. They are aimed downward, lower than the headlights.

When you're in a situation where you're shining lights in someone's eyes (like when you're coming over a hill) you'll blind them even more with foglights on. There really is no need. I hate it when others have their fog lights on for no reason. A disproportionately high number of people that do are Toyota drivers.

This makes zero sense. The fog lights shine well below the low beams, and help light up the side of the road a bit (biggest advantage IMO), but they do not shine bright into an oncoming vehicle like an actual headlight would.
Btw, the reason Toyota’s have them on most of the time is because they have a hard analog for light switch to accompany the auto lights. Not a bad thing IMO.

Come on now, are you really saying that you cannot see a scenario where both the fog lights and headlights are in people's eyes? Happens to be me on the regular. Also, in a quick Google search I see that there are some places where it is illegal to drive with fog lights on when it is clear out. I haven't fully vetted that but if that is true, there is a reason for that.

Non issue , fog lights are so low to the ground + light output is minimal at best

It definitely helps illuminate the road better . You will hear varying opinions on the matter but certain states it is frowned upon

End of the day just do you . And you can easily test it out yourself if indeed it does blind oncoming vehicles. Just have a friend/family member pass you by the opposite direction

I live rural in the land of hopped up pickups with crappy high lume light bars on every inch of their front end. My oem fog lights that are aimed and projected low are not even remotely offensive in the grand scheme of other vehicles.
In contrast, my Power Wagon with its oem projection headlights sits so high off the ground that the low beam is always in the windshield or over the Prius roof size cars in front of me.

I will say in general, newer Toyotas have very bright but poorly aimed LED headlights that scatter light everywhere in front of them. They look like flood lights but they are legal and so we tolerate them as licensed adults.

I’m in the ‘don’t be that guy’ camp, and sorry, but regardless of where the lights are aimed, they still create more light and are really annoying for some of us. Bottom line is they’re called fog lights for a reason, over here we have a red rear fog light as well, and it’s illegal to use either front or rear unless there’s fog or visibility issues.

Yes, I’m saying that about fog lights. They are without question aimed well below the low beam headlights, so I don’t see how they can blind any oncoming traffic. I don’t recall being blinded in any way by fog lights, ever.
I personally don’t care if it’s illegal in some states, as it does not make any sense at the end of the day.

At what point do we put a priority on our own ability to see the best we can at night with the legal equipment provided as opposed to be hypersensitive about how other drivers feel about being mildly annoyed?

Perhaps this is a cultural thing but how far does being concerned about other motorist take you down that road of sensibilities?? Does anyone feel concerned in general they’re driving a large full size vehicle with the most advanced safety features might give them a significant edge in survivability over a compact car they might get in a wreck with?? At a certain point you have to do what is best for you and let others take care of themselves.
I want every advantage and legal tool at my disposal to enhance my driving ability and safety and will pay to have them to give what others might view an unfair advantage over other motorists. That includes night vision, laser lights, and fog lights if necessary to see deer or other obstacles.

Fog lights help me avoid wheel-shattering Chicago potholes at night.

If you don’t like it stay in the house.

Do fog lights illuminate the road far enough to see potholes? I turned them on last night but they didn't make significant difference in added visibility - they just illuminated maybe 5 feet in front of the car, which, in my opinion, doesn't leave a lot of time to see a pothole and swerve safely while driving.
