G20 340i & 48 volt sysem
Does anyone now if the new 340I uses a 48 volt system and electric turbo to eliminate lag on the low end and a larger turbo to supply enough air on top. As we all know, the 335 torque plummets after 5500.

doubt it, BMW would have made it more obvious when unveiling the car or at least put it in the press release. I think this just turned out and stayed a rumor, but the M3 could have one possibly.

I am not aware of BMW using 48-volt mild hybrid system in any of its current lineup, unlike Audi or MB; although BMW development chief had said that it would be coming in the future. It will most likely debut in cars such as the next M3/4.

I have no doubt BMW will start adding a 48V electrical system soon. Audi has implemented it on their A6,A7,and A8 and Q8. and Mercedes is following suit with the new upcoming S Class, GLS and GLE.

Maybe they will come with the drivetrain refresh of the LCI. BMW seems to go with drivetrain updates mid lifecycle of a model.
Mild hybrids are completely different from something like the 330e. They will offer a torque boost at low revs directly to the crank via the 48V motor/alternator/starter. |

I'm somehow not able to find a source in english, but there are several german websites which quote Klaus Fröhlich on this topic. Basically he said nowadays (and that seems to include the G20) cars have a 48V bord net of the first generation, which does not give any advantages whatsoever, except for some extended coasting and start/stop. There will be a second generation, which will start to be fitted to the cars in 2020, which will bring all the advantages, like a 20kW start generator with additional 100Nm torque.
For those of you who want to use some google translate on it: https://www.bimmertoday.de/2018/08/2...ation-ab-2020/ I would guess that maybe a 4 series GC might feature that, a G20 will realistically have to wait until LCI. |

Sounds like BS, new Mercedes inline six-cylinder M256 engine is their first 48-volt electrical system available on 2017 S-class and it has an electric compressor on the top of conventional turbo. It also has Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) which provides an additional 22 hp and 180 pounds of torque. Audi uses similar system for their 2019 A6 and A7. BMW needs to catch up.

No it doesn't but the B58 engine in the F30 340i and G20 M340i pulls much, much harder to redline than any stock N54 or N55 ever did. I've had all three engines and was very happy with the B58's power delivery even right up to redline.

One of the good things about a 48v. system is that the LiOH battery can be used to keep the charge up on the 12V battery. The i3 propulsion battery does this to the 12v. battery. This is good news for those of us that have to keep a maintenance charger on the 12v battery because of infrequent usage, because we won't need to do that any more.
