2021 M340 ticking/cracking noise from sunroof

So I've had my car for about 2 months now and I started noticing a noise coming from the sunroof when I'm driving.

Already took it to the dealer once last week for the issue and attempted to be resolved by putting in new lube and torquing the cassette bolts.

Received the car back 3 days later and I'm already noticing the noise coming again and I have scheduled another appointment at service for next week

Does anyone else have this issue? If it persists, anyone have any ideas what I should do?

It does that when the sunroof is closed. It's so annoying when on the road.

I even went to take a video of it for the dealer this morning.

I've been to the dealer like 10 times at this point. New sunroof glass, Lube everywhere, felt tape, insulating clips. Still have the squeek. They think I'm crazy at this point. It makes me never want to get a bmw again sometimes

I've got the same issue on my 330e, drives me nuts. Much worse now in the winter. I found a temporary fix for a few days, by sticking a small plastic guitar pick where the edge of the headliner and the plastic trim for the sunroof starts at the front of the sunroof. That fixed it for a few days. I think ill try to jam some velcro tape or something between next.

Any ideas and other solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Well I'm scheduled back to the dealer next Friday with I don't know how long they will have my car again.

I contacted BMW Corporate and they said if my cars is at the dealer for a long extended period of time for the issue then they'll figure out compensation.

I've had this issue for over two months now and there's only 1500 miles on my car lol. The tapping sound seems to be improved when I keep the sunroof cover open at all times. I tend to forget about it because my driver's side B-pillar rattles even crazier. I love bmw as a brand, and my M340i performs beyond expectations, but these annoying issues are really starting to make me reconsider.

My local dealer is incredibly small in scale so I don't have much faith in them. My car's been in there once and I'll probably bring it in again later this month. It's likely that they'll have to stop out the headliner to locate the cause of the rattle. Hopefully things do get fixed or else I'll have to seek alternative options.

I had a tapping (like lightly hitting two pieces of plastic together) sound from the sunroof on the passenger side. Like mancala320, I thought was coming from where the headliner meets the plastic trim, and I'd tried stuffing small pieces of felt tape in the gap which seemed to work for a while. Eventually narrowed it down to the front of the gaiter (the rubber accordion piece). Stuffing a small rag around it kept it quiet (see pic). Dealer said it wasn't attached to the glass correctly, and replaced it. In hindsight, I was probably nudging it back into it's proper position when I was adding the felt tape, and then it took a few days to work loose again. Anyway, it's been about 3 weeks since I got it back, and seems to be fixed.

Also had the same noise ALotOfKirbys posted, but only when the sunroof was in the vented position. Dealer tried SIB 54 15 19 (apply krytox to the seals) and SIB 54 16 19 (apply grease to the sunshade guide rails) first, but also ended up making some adjustments to the position of the glass itself. That one also seems to be fixed now.

Hope you guys get this resolved!

I'm having the same issue. It's driving me nuts.

It's a light ticking noise, that I hear mostly with the sunroof in the vented position. Closing the sunroof makes the ticking noise less frequent. When I'm on certain types of less than perfect roads, ie older or coarse asphalt it is best defined as a persistent rattle. The sound appears to come from the back of the sunroof, and it's more noticeable when the sunshade is open, though still there when it's closed (and roof vented). I actually wondered if it may be coming from the headliner, near the roof light, but it's definitely sunroof related.

I mentioned it to the dealer on the last service.
"We couldn't replicate the issue".

I have a similar sound in my sunroof where it creaks/squeaks randomly. Took it to two separate dealers and they think I'm nuts. Scheduled my third dealer visit next week. Im ready to sell the car if they can't fix it.

I had the same issue in my 330e - drove me nuts, Did everything with the sunroof and the centre dome light. Eventually found that it was the headliner clicking. It was coming from around the passenger sun shade area where it is fixed / swivels. After much experimenting I pushed foam up into that area from the where the headliner meets with windscreen and pushed it hard up again the sunroof surround from inside, with a wooden spoon!
Since then the problem has gone, and I had tried everything prior to that!

Any chance you have any pictures of what you did? Im about to go to my third dealer for this. First two think I'm nuts. Shouldn't have these problems in a premium vehicle in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing! So basically the part that was making the noise was the plastic boot (54108737867) ? or which was the part that wasn't attached properly to the glass? I have exactly the same problem that you explained (having the sunroof tilted is horrible)... any help is highly appreciated!

It was the rubber boot (part number is 54-10-7-447-854 I believe), that wasn't attached properly. The part that this guy's holding down in the pic https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...&postcount=239

That said, that wasn't the part that was causing the crazy noises from the front of the sunroof when it was tilted. To fix that they said they had to adjust the position of the glass itself. Took them a few tries to get it right apparently.

Hope this helps!

My 2020 M340i had a clicking sunroof but it’s been sorted under warranty as BMW have issued a Service Bulletin about it (the fix involves repacking the rails with special heavy duty grease).

Do you happen to have a link or PDF of the service bulletin?
