"Rear" seat button on the Drivers door

Question - Is it normal for the button to make the front seats move forward?
When I press the forward arrow of the Rear seat buttons, the first thing that happens is that my seat gets jacked forward. Because to this, I set the button to only move the right side rear seat.
I wish it just moved the rear seats, and did not make either front seat move. But I did not see and way to accomplish this in the setup.

The front seat moving forward slightly before the second row seat moves forward, as you are describing, is how it is supposed to work. It is to ensure the front seat will be completely clear of the middle seat before the middle seat goes fully forward to allow access to the 3rd row.

I guess I missed the point of the buttons - to let people into the 3rd row from the drivers seat. I was hoping it could just move the 2nd row forward and back.

I agree… the other unfortunate thing is we cannot have occupants in the car while moving any row of the seat for opening / folding and getting in and out for 3rd row

Yeah, but would you really want to move one side of the second row bench, to gain access to the third row, if someone was still sitting in that side of the second row bench ? For my X7, I have that button setup to fold one side so if one person is in the second row, they can move over (if necessary) to allow access to the 3rd row when I hit the switch....

Yes, trying to do it that way … my earlier car needed less supervision for kids to get in and out. With X7 it needs more supervision 😊

Just came across this, been looking in the manual, and I didn’t see a setting to customize which side of the second row moves forward - we have the captains chairs and the car seat is on the passenger side so driver can look back to see the little one. A bit unusual since it means anyone going into the third row enters on the driver’s side, would like to change that switch to the driver’s side chair.

This functionality is not applicable to Captains Chairs, only X7's with the 2nd row bench seat, as you manually fold the Captain Chair forward for access to the 3rd row. The menu to change the function of that button from moving the whole bench seat or just one side is in iDrive. I am not sure what that button does, if anything, for X7's with the second row Captains Chairs....

For me on the captains, it does move the seat forward and up, but does not manually fold the back of the seat forward. I accidentally pushed the button when my toddler was in the seat once, it moved the whole car seat up and towards the front.

I hate the fact that after you execute a rear seat move and move the rear seat back to the seating position, it never puts the front seats back to the position they were in before you moved the back seats. I have to push the saved memory buttons for it to return to my saved position.

This should be a simple thing for BMW. But no, they just can't seem to figure out how to accomplish that task.

That's one of my top complaints about the X7, the 2nd and 3rd row seat operations, and this is one of the included aspects.

I am still terrified that some child is going to get hurt as the second row moves due to an inadvertent push of one of the 50 buttons that can trigger the folding motion. Button by the driver's door. Buttons at the second row columns. Buttons in the trunk.

And I find the whole thing preposterous. 5 of us in the car, have to pick my daughter up from a movie in the pouring rain, it's really coming down hard, the open seat is in the third row. Despite the conditions, the second row passenger and the front row passenger have to get out of the car in order for her to get in. I'll never understand BMW's thinking on this. Then again, they are the company that forced me to an X7 because they stopped making X5's with the 3rd row option so why should I be surprised.

Found the answer:
. The video also shows the captains moving up without folding the back. Could be the answer for those that have untethered child seats (begs the question of why not just put the tether on the seat itself like every other car) and using LATCH, as it looks like they fill fold forward without the back moving around.

Interesting that you have that issue, as I don't with my X7. The front seat will return to it's original position. But what I have seen happen in my X7 is that sometimes the second row seat (left or right) will sometimes not return to it's original position - but most of the time it will. So go figure....

Why does the front seat passenger need to get out prior to second row movement? My experience has been that while the front seat will move to an uncomfortable position while the second row moves, it still does move with a person sitting in it, and then returns to it's original position : ....

I guess I must be the lucky one with my seats and how they operate. But then, I have only needed to use the 3rd row for a passengers a few times after 1+ year of ownership...

Mine have never worked correctly. The front seats move after the back seats return but they don't move all the way back to their original positions. Plus, the back seats don't go back to their original position either.

Based on responses in this thread it sounds like BMW is giving out boxes of chocolates. You never know what your going to get.

Something I am sure some coding could fix, if you can find the right coding parameters....

For me on the captains, it does move the seat forward and up, but does not manually fold the back of the seat forward. I accidentally pushed the button when my toddler was in the seat once, it moved the whole car seat up and towards the front.
This could be a potential disaster in regards to the isofixes. On the drivers door, press the child lock window button (window with an X on it, will turn green). This will lock the second row seats from being adjusted, so that when a child seat is installed it doesn't explode.
