$1400+ for oil change, vehicle check, engine air filter, and cabin air filter change?

Went in for an oil change at BMW of South Austin and they wanted to charge $1400+ to change the oil, check the vehicle, and change the engine air filters and cabin air filters. When the SA told me what they wanted to do, I assumed there was some special filter I had never heard of. Nope. Oil change was $180, vehicle check was $200 (he said it was a VERY thorough check…mmm hmm), and the rest was the parts and labor for replacing the filters.

I bought all the filters for $202 and will just replace them all myself. It’s ridiculous what they want to charge - now I’ve blacklisted both dealerships in Austin.

So, BMW Plano did something like this when I took my 2019 X3 in, but it was only $400-$500. Oil change, cabin filter, vehicle check. SA was really pushing the vehicle check…said they may find things that may need servicing.

Passed on vehicle check and cabin filter. Still was like over $100.

Just find an independent shop or keep doing it yourself. Too easy.

You should see what a porche dealership charges on a 911. Lol.

That's why I do everything myself, even though I could "afford" to pay it. F that. On principle.

Dealerships typically make 80% revenue and 20% profit in the showroom, and 20% revenue and 80% profit in parts/service.

You should really look into the BMW Ultimate Care Scheduled. It costs like $900 and covers all scheduled services from 3yr /36k miles to 5yr / 75k miles.

I think it's the best plan if you don't have ultimate care plus. They do not promote this plan.

What is more aggravating is on top of paying $1400 for this, that they don't even install the panels back correctly, or chew up the head of the screws involved in this effort.

It's no laugh....$450 for an oil change ONLY!

....I might be missing something, but Porsche makes resetting the oil service light much more difficult than BMW.

Oil change is simple and better off in your hands, instead of a dumb lube tech. Too many horror storys. I get 3 free oil changes with my 24 x7 and I would still rather do it my self.

Not surprised at all. This is whats going on with service departments of every car dealerships. It feels like they are trying to make more money from their service dept than their Sales.

For other cars, I usually goes with those coupon deals for oil change, wheel alignments, brake jobs etc. Then about filters, I always change them myself. It was always straight forward for all the previous cars I owns(ed). By the time the car gets to the point where it needs serious work outside warranty I sell them.

For my X7 all these things are covered until 7yrs/125K miles (as per my knowledge so far, but pretty sure will find out all the exclusions once I approach them for some major repair job).

I see that some bmw dealerships near my area offer some coupon deals. But have not seen that with bmw of Plano, crazy busy place in the entire DFW area, very professional and Great service, (but I paid $0 last time I went there, covered all the services that I needed).

Where did you get that warranty? I’ve never seen anything past 5 years.

Labor is really the killer. I see them charging 180+/hr for labor which is insane because the tech sees barely any of that

I checked but they only had the engine air filters unfortunately. I also figured by the next time I need to change them, it'll probably be time to sell/trade.

Reset Vehicle Check Reminder

My BMW dealership in East Bay (Pleasanton, Ca) just tried to do similar. I came in for an oil change and they quoted $240 for a Vehicle Check, $336 for engine filter, and $285 for microfilter. I passed on all of them and will do the work myself.

Any ideas on how to reset the Vehicle Check warning on the car? It’s annoying that it shows up when you start it and when I open the BMW app… I’m assuming an OBD code scanner won’t do it…

THIS IS CRAZY!…

My local BMW dealer have consistently charged me 130-150 for all my BMWs during the 10K miles service, for the X7, 5-series and X5… all were in that price range…. Oil change and new oil filter.

As for cabin air filter, or engine filter, I usually do those myself, and even if I’d let the dealer do them they’d probably charge an additional 20 or 30 bucks + parts.

Unless things have drastically changed in the last few years…you can usually reset the CBS services (condition based services) using the instrument cluster button or turn indicator stalk (if there’s no buttons on the cluster).

There should also be videos on youtube that give a visual. And some newer models have a special 3 button press to enter diagnostic mode…and some don’t.

Thanks! I was able to reset it after holding the BC button for what seemed like closer to 30 seconds…

What is unbelievable is they want to charge you to “check your vehicle” when actually this is the dealer’s opportunity to find things that require repairs and potentially make money if you do them.

That’s why on our previous Honda and Hyundai a full vehicle check was part of the routine for whatever reason we brought the vehicle in.
