Sure can you confirm if this kit is compatible with the X7?

Nope, wrong oil filter, but the oil is one of the correct variants for the B58 engine in the X7. FCP does not currently have a "kit" for the X7 yet (which surprises me). You will need to add the oil and filter individually to your cart on their site. The correct part number for the oil filter for the B58 engine is 11428583898.

Incidentally, when you bring your X7 back to the dealer for the next included oil change, they will most likely put BMW 0W-20 oil in the X7. Not a big deal as it is still approved for the B58 engine. But if you want it, you will need to specifically ask for 0W-30 - which the dealer may or may not oblige (but they should if they have it in stock).

1. The oil capacity is 6.5 liters = 6.9 quarts for the US spec 40i. OEM BMW oil comes in liter bottles.

2. You don't need to disable the air suspension but you will need to get the X7 off the ground to have enough room to work. If you don't have access to a hydraulic lift (like at an auto shop/garage), ramps will work too (you can find them at any auto parts store).

3. 25nm is the torque spec for the drain bolt. Don't over torque that bolt.

4. I prefer OEM BMW oil while under warranty, but what is most important is the oil grade and BMW designation. The X7 40i takes full synthetic 0W-20 or 0W-30 oil that is LL-01 or LL01FE - I prefer 0W-30. There are a few other authorized variants as well in your owners manual, but stick to one that BMW recommends.

5. You can order oil online or get it at your local auto parts store or Walmart. Prices can vary depending on brand or items being on sale. Just stick to the correct grade and BMW designation.

6. As far as the FCP Euro lifetime warranty, even for used oil and filters, it is real. But the hassle and cost to ship it back is noteworthy (and not always worth it) depending on where you live and which shipping means you use. Used oil is HAZMAT so it is not like shipping a box of chocolates.

7. If you have not done so already, search the net for DIY videos on changing the oil in the B58 engine (which the 40i has). The procedure is not hard, but it is always nice to actually see it done first if you can. Kies Motorsports actually did a video recently for the X7 40i.

Good Luck!
Thanks for the details, one last question, do I need 2 ramps or 4? I mean do I need to just lift the front 2 or back 2 or do I need to lift all 4? The problem for me is that I live in an apartment and it’s about storage space for me
Can I be honest with you? Maybe you should take this car to the dealer and pay the $160 for the oil change. Asking if you need to lift all 4, is a bad sign. I don't mean to be a d***, but thank me later.

My local dealer when I used to live in MD would have $59.99 oil change specials for any BMW 6-cyl engine - even the M3 ….. I miss those days.

Yea, at the time, there wasnt anything available except 10% off coupons. They do have $199 oil service for 3 years but that only applies to vehicles that are 5yrs or older or have 60k+ miles

My local BMW dealer offers what they call "Value Service" where an oil/filter change is $99 (used to be $89 as recently as end of 2020).

This is just oil/filter, doesn't include topping off other fluids and the checks they do on a normal oil service. that one costs around $300.

As someone who uses FCP's program often, the return process is far from a hassle. All I have to do is print an RMA form with replacement order # and put the used oil into the containers and box the new oil was shipped in. Replace the zip tie on the bag they ship it in and done. Pro-tip, pay for the order with Paypal and take advantage of Paypal's free return shipping. Simply just print a return shipping label from your Paypal account. I usually have the box ready to be picked up by fedex faster than I can make it back and forth to the gas station for oil recycling. Used oil is no more of a hazmat issue than new oil, so UPS or Fedex ground shipping are fine.

I have the basic wrench kit as you can see here in attached. I believe I have the 16mm nut driver for releasing the oil from the bottom.

1. I am changing oil at 5K miles, do I need to change the oil filter as well since this is halfway through the recommendation?
2. For oil filter cap I guess I just need a 32mm socket like this?
https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-PT-STD...dp/B01N6DC1DT/
3. I saw a video where the guy used an electronic wrench to adjust the tightness, do I need that?
4. Just curious, where do you trash the oil after extracting it out?
5. Where is the cheap & best place to buy oil and filter?

Any tips for a first time person changing oil is welcome
Always replace your oil filter, especially if it's a 40i. There have been numerous reports of the oem filter falling apart and causing issues, including need to remove the OFH.

Also, don't worry about how this is profitable for FCP. It is brilliant marketing and I am friends with the VP of Marketing. They are a great bunch, true enthusiasts and the business has been growing to the point they just added 60 new positions.

While you do want to be diligent with your research to make sure you don’t mess up something (and coming to a forum like this is one of many good sources of information), an oil change is probably the best “first” DIY car maintenance item you can do. Oil changes on 6-cyl BMWs are very straight forward. Just take your time and you will be fine. And when you are done you will have some satisfaction of doing it yourself .

If there is one slight nuance with the oil change of the B58 engine in the X7, it is the placement of the oil filter. Between the extra size/height of the X7 (compared to a car) and the placement of the oil filter in the back of the engine compartment close to the firewall on the drivers side, it can be a bit awkward to get to. The factory procedure has you temporarily re-locate one of the expansion tanks to give you better access to the oil filter housing. But even then, you may need a small step stool (depending on how tall you are) to get the best access to the oil filter housing and pull out the filter once you unscrew the cap. But it is not rocket science (or computer engineering either ).

I guess no one likes the oil extraction devices you use with your compressor? Used them on my A6 religiously and they worked great, anyone here use them on the X7.. if not any reason why?

Well for one, I am not convinced that the extraction tube could get all the way to the bottom of the oil pan, thus not getting all (or most of) the old oil out. Also, even if the tube could get to the bottom of the oil pan (via the oil fill), I would be concerned that the tube could possibly get caught on something inside the engine, and possibly break. That would be a real bad day. That said, if the BMW engines were designed to have oil extraction from the oil fill, I might consider it. But I have never heard of that…
