It hasn't happened yet, but I assumed the mechanical problem that would be the biggest pain would be when the waterpump goes...leaving the family stranded who-knows-where.

However today I changed my mind. Went to add some washer fluid and the hood release failed, somewhere under the hood. A cheap part that will likely cost me a pile for BMW to get the hood open. I searched the forums and spent 3 hours under the car - but can't see anyway to open the hood. It's like breaking your house key, when you are locked out of the house!

Very frustrating! Glad it didn't happen on the road, as I doubt many shops can fix this. Will find out this week I guess.

Hmm I have to disagree. Your car can still be driven. There is nothing like your car going into limp mode and dying on a highway far from home.
