2025 owners: Have you been able to change lane by looking at the side mirror?

I have been trying to see how this gimmick work in action on my MY25 X7 to no success. Engaged the handsfree driving mode in highway and drove for 30mins and there were multiple opportunities for it to suggest lane change which it didn't and only way to have it change lane was using the stalk. Just wondering if anyone else with a 2025 X7 has seen this work in action? Here's the feature I am talking about

"Active Lane Change, when the driver can confirm suggested lane changes simply by looking in the corresponding exterior side mirror"

Interesting. I will try it with navigation.

I believe I did once, but it was in the first few days of ownership so I don’t recall the exact conditions and settings that were necessary to get it to work.

I picked up the X7 a few days ago and haven't had a chance to try this feature, but the way they explained it to me at the dealership is that you have to look in the mirror for five seconds or more before it will change lanes.

Only works when you use BMW navigation to a destination. You don’t have to look for 5 seconds. Happens in 1-2 seconds max.

Is this available for the MY2024 as well? I find the option of using the stalk extremely aggressive as the car changes lane very rapidly and speeds up to the speed you had set if there are no cars in front of you.

No, it is something they added to 2025 models as part of the DAPP package. They first rolled it out to the 7 series sedan and now the X7. I don't know if they will end up adding it to MY24 X7s or not but my guess is they will because I have a 2023 760 in my BMW account and got a notification that a software update is available that adds this feature.

Edit: added the update notification I referred to.

Well, I won’t be getting this anytime soon. I disabled automatic software updates on my car. Had to trade a X7 because of an update that bricked my car so unless it is a mandatory update done by the dealer I won’t even try it.

I have turned my auto updates off as well. I’m very happy with how the vehicle is performing in its current software.

So many folks re-learning how to drive, experimenting with auto-pilot features, staring at the rear view mirror instead of the road ahead (wait - did I enable collision avoidance?). Ever teach a teenager to drive? Managing all these driver assist systems is about as relaxing as that. Why isn't this gimmick working? Now I can't find the owner's manual that explains it on the nav screen. Honest officer - I wasn't texting. Not sure what scares me most - all this high tech automation, or people trying to make it work while driving.

I've disabled updates also -- this crap is confusing enough -- changes every 6 months make it worse.

Have you considered keeping your negativity to yourself instead of forcing yourself into every thread about ADAS to shit on people enjoying useful new features that they like?

Am I missing something? I went for a drive in my X7 and set the navigation to my destination. I was using hands-free driving but couldn't change lanes by looking in the side mirrors. How do I make this work?

Distracted driving is a major contributor to highway accidents (https://www.forbes.com/advisor/legal/auto-accident/distracted-driving-statistics/). Folks driving around (such as the OP) trying to figue out how to make their "new useful features that they like" work as they think these features are supposed to work qualify as distracted drivers.

Not all ADAS features are bad, but I fail to see any utility in the alternative of staring into a mirror versus using a turn signal and hands on to execute a lane change. The OP refers to it as a gimmick, which appropriately characterizes it IMO (which forum rules permit, just as is yours permitted).

No, I've never once considered keeping my opinions to myself -- have you?

Apparently you should wait for it to suggest the lange change (when the car thinks it is a good idea) in the instrument cluster and then you can look at the corresponding side mirror. I yet have to see it on mine though

I finally was able to use this feature today. Navigation was engaged, I was going in the middle lane at around 55 mph. Set the drive assist at 75mph and went handsfree. On the center lane, there was a car in front of me and the left lane was empty so the car showed me the icon for lane change in instrument cluster and HUD and I looked at the left side mirror and it initiate the lane change. It was neatly done but not sure if I have the patience to wait for all the stars to align for the car to suggest it lol

haha, me either, think I will stick to the turn signal. It will still make the lane change but you just have to tap it lightly.

It is a 2025 only feature. They may add it to 2024 models later on as software update (this is my guess and not an official confirmation).

My guess is if they add it to the 2024 X7 as a software update it will cost you $400.

Driving Assistance Prof Package went up from $2100 (2024) to $2500 (2025) solely because they added the Active Lane Change feature to it. I would think BMW won’t give it to you for free.

It is possible but what they did with 2023 760s gave me hope it can be free. See my post above . They basically sent a notification to bring the car in to the dealer for a free of charge software update to get this feature.
