The scariest quake for me was the Sylmar quake in 1971. Was a magnitude 6.6 and was at around 6am. Just turned 16yo and lived in L.A. in an upstairs apartment with my family. The whole building started shaking violently. I was asleep with my cat in my room and I woke up and ran outside in my underwear with my cat under my arm. Will never forget it. At least 58 people died.

Other earthquakes I remember were the Whittier earthquake in 1987, which was a magnitude 5.9 and killed 8 people and caused 200 injuries.

Another one was the Northridge earthquake in 1994 - magnitude 6.7, 57 died. Was living in my current home. They say the big one is still to come.

I pray for the ppl in Japan. I recall the Landers (7.3) and Big Bear (6.5) quakes of June 1992. Lived in Orange County and watched the water sloshing out of my pool. Moved to the Midwest shortly thereafter. Don’t miss the CA quakes, fires, floods, mudslides, riots, traffic, politics, and so on, at all.

Tbh, I think I'll take the quakes over hurricanes, tornadoes, humidity, freezing weather, etc. Don't have any of that in the mild climate I live in. Quakes don't come that often, the other things I mentioned above come every year.

The Oregon coast is overdue for a major earthquake and the resulting tsunami. The last one was in 1700 and the geologists say the pattern is one every 300 years or so. The cause is the Cascadia tectonic plate sliding under the North American plate and "catching" -- then every 300 years or so, it releases like a spring with deadly consequences.

Native Americans did not have good records of the date, but the last one's tsunami reached Japan and they had good records.

In recent years, highway 101 along the coast has been posted with signs indicating where the elevation is such that it is a tsunami safe zone.

There are no large cities along the Oregon coast, but coastal resorts and beaches are crowded in the summer. There's a coastal mountain range between the coast and my place, but the earthquake portion could be quite powerful and may have impact here.

Yup. I guess it’s what you grew up with. I grew up in FL and now live in SC so I know all about hurricanes, tornadoes and humidity. Son still lives in OCounty and wife’s fam lives in San Diego so we do visit often and enjoy it.

Big Bear rings a big bell for me... We lived in Del Mar, Ca, and I remember opnening the front door of our apartment and watching the ground undulate like crazy. I grabbed our 6 month old son and got under the nearest door I could find. Never seen anything like it before.

The worst for me was Easter Sunday, 2009. I was at the beach in Del Mar, having my cervezas when all of a sudden there was a grumbling from the cliff above me. I hopped up and ran to the water. When I came back, I found my cell phone smashed by a boulder that had come down the hill. I was just sitting there. Scary stuff.

Yes, definitely scary stuff. The one I posted about above, the Whittier quake in 1987; my daughter was in kindergarten class when it hit and her classroom had big glass windows which scared me.

I was working nearby and immediately left work and went to her school. She was okay and the class had evacuated to a safe location. You always worry about your family more than yourself, especially your kids.

I was 5. I remember that one though, for other "traumatic" reasons. My father had the habit of sleeping in his birthday suit, and without his glasses he was well beyond legally blind. He grabbed me, mom grabbed my 1yo bro, and we all huddled in the hallway door frame.

I was a dumb kid and panicked, being woken up by an earthquake. The last thing you want to do is run outside where falling debris can hit you. The right thing to do is crouch down before you get knocked down, preferably under a table/desk or doorway, try to cover your head and neck and wait for the shaking to stop.

I grew up in SC and now live in Texas and felt the same way until I went thru the big one in Japan in Mar 2011. I was on the Narita Express to leave Tokyo when it hit. The train stopped and didn't move for nearly 17 hours. I thought the train was going to shake off the track. And there were about 40 aftershocks over 6.0 - enough to make you wonder what was coming next.

Funny part of the story - when we finally got to Narita airport they refunded a big portion of the ticket price because the train was delayed.

New details. Seems the coast guard plane did not have permission to enter the runway. Tower said "Taxi to holding point". Coast guard plane confirmed "taxi to holding point". Seems like 2 minutes later they entered the runway and the collision.

Most deaths were from drowning. I thought I was going to be in Japan for a long time from hearing the news of the tsunami and Fukushima power plant problems but got lucky.

It was so mild I thought it was my wife letting the door that goes to the garage slam.
