Bad Brake Squeak

Any ideas how to handle? I’m 38k miles in but just had inspected and winter wheel swap and no mention of worn pads.

I’ll try to post a video but it’s embarrassingly loud when soft braking from 20mph to 5 or so. Only when the outside air cools down below 50.

I have 1000 miles and the brakes always make a pretty loud noise but no squeak yet.

M brakes or regular?

2021 M50i here with awful brake squeak while coming to stop. I am taking mine back to the dealer soon but first time around they told me brake pads are OK. Do the rotors need to be resurfaced?

2019 and 2022 both with M-Sport brakes. No squeaks at all, or noise. 45K miles on one of them. The 2019 is dead silent. The 2022 has a slight “pad grib” noise towards the last 4-6 inches when am coming to stop which is normal and can’t be heard from outside (only from inside with Radio off and no traffic around”

There are many complaints on one of the MB forums about squealing brakes on G63s, and the problem seems to be the pad to caliper interface, not pad to rotor.

the pads on most recent bmws with M sport brakes are adhesive bonded to the pistons to stop the squealing. wondering if that bond has failed.

from what i can gather its not regular VHB tape, not sure if it can be renewed, not sure where to source the vhb they use for the pads.

Thanks for the info - would this be covered under warranty or considered as wear and tear?

not sure, its going to depend on the dealer and what stance they take. brake pads are a wear item, so i can see them going that way. but if the squealing is being caused by the pads no longer being bonded to the pistons, that seems to be a defect.

Here's a video of mine.
I should have had them inspect when I had the winters thrown on. My fear is that they'll just tell me that new pads are required and I really didn't want to deal with that.

Is spraying with brake cleaner frowned upon?

TIS says to remove the adhesive from the piston with brake cleaner when replacing the pads, so my guess would be that it would break down the bond.
TIS also notes that once the pads are removed (bond broken) the pads need to be replaced.

Try Disc Brake Quiet spray on the backs of the pads.

If I have this brake noise to look forward to , I'll be turning the X7 back in after lease instead of purchasing. That's embarrassing to drive a 100k vehicle and hv it sound like this and BMW to say it's normal. I've seen other post on this subject and that's what the BMW service techs state upon inspection.

Just curious but is it possible to use the standard non-sport X7 brakes from the 40i for those that don’t hot rod around smashing the brakes. Maybe another brake pad option is available?

Wow! That’s more than the usual break squeal or squeak.. For that noise you must be metal to metal. If you Keep going like that you may need rotors by the time it’s addressed. You pull the wheel yet and take a look? If you pull the wheel you can look in on the side of the caliper and you can see the pad left on it.

Also I think the electronic pad level sensor is only on one of the inner pads on one side of the vehicle. (At least that’s how my MB GLS ). I’m assuming the X7 is the same way. So with that being said you could have A seized caliper on the side that does not have the sensor and the inner pad is toast. I haven’t pulled the wheel my my 23 X7 yet to see which one has the sensor. Few thousand miles more until a rotation then I will know.

But I wouldn’t let it go like that for long. If your metal to metal then the hot little metal pieces come out of there and can pit the finish on the wheels or worse the side of the vehicle.

If you’re in upstate NY come on over I’ll pull the wheel.

did you confirm that there isn't any stone or something else between piston and rotor?
Also are you able to identify the wheel this squeal is coming from?

You guys with brake issues should look into Ultimate Care+. It's $700.

Purchase BMW Ultimate Care+ to add:
Replacement of specific wear-and-tear items such as brake pads, wiper blades and manual transmission clutch (for model year 2017 vehicles and newer).
Ultimate Care+ is transferable to a subsequent owner, should you sell your vehicle.

It only happens when temps drop. Noticed at the end of last winter and it then went away. For example, tomorrow is supposed to be high 50s. I won’t have an issue. Sunday morning back into low 30s I’ll hear it’ll be back.

Also no abnormal marks on my rotors. No gouging or anything.

You look at the other side (inside/backside) of the rotors? Hard to see if the wheel is still on. I keep thinking you have an inner pad issue. Otherwise just take it into the shop. It’s not normal.

I think this is fairly common in German cars. My X7 and my VW Passat both make a squeak noise when braking at a low speed.

If your brakes are checked by a technician and they found they are fine I won't worry about this too much..
