Best cargo roof box?

Does anyone have suggestions for the best roof cargo box that also fits large traveling luggage bags?

I have a Thule Motion XT XL. It works really well for my camping trips. There is a bigger XXL version available as well.

In terms of cross bars, BMW OEMs are very easy to install and remove, but not everyone likes their looks. Some other 3rd party options are available, but I can't comment on that.

Let me know if you have any questions.

There is a pretty long thread with lots of feedback on boxes, bars, etc. It was definitely active this summer so it should show up pretty easily if you search for it.

Does the Thule Motion XT XL (or XXL) fit "large" luggage bags, like the largest international size?

I have always wondered how much the additional wind resistance affected mileage with these.

It definitely impacts ours by at least a mile or two per gallon. But to what extent, who knows b/c the other variable for us is when I use ours on whatever vehicle (X7, Q7, Escalade ESV), it also means we're fully loaded with people as well. We're also typically doing a mainly highway drive so the speeds are going to exacerbate the aero drag.

Thanks. I believe wind resiostance increases as the square of speed.

Not a science guy, but I believe that is correct. I prefer to use our "back porch" off the tow hitch, but sometimes that's not possible or not enough. Thus the need for the roof box.

Not much, I think I was getting prob 1-2 miles less with the box on highway.

I also have the Thule XXL and OEM crossbars. I bought the largest size box so as not to be disappointed in the future because I didnt have enough space. The OEM crossbars maintain enough room for the roof to open and are super easy/quick to get on and off. Not as sleek as some of the other options, but I do not leave it on except when in use. I did not notice any significant noise, but I did try to limit my speed as suggested by Thule.

I should add, I bought the OEM crossbars at BMW Parts Hub. Part # 82-71-2-455-808. They confirmed it was the right part for the 2024, even though the description lists as 2019-2022. It was much cheaper than direct...
