BMW X7 v Range Rover: Ultimate luxury test! [Carwow]

When it comes to luxurious 7-seater SUVs, it doesn’t get much better than the BMW X7 and Range Rover LWB!

The question is - If you’re looking to splash the cash on a high-quality SUV, which should you choose? Well, Mat is here to run you through these two contenders to see which is best!

When it comes to the design, these two are pretty different to each other but still look good from the outside. Not only are they both imposing due to their size, but they both manage to stand out. The Range Rover looks sophisticated from the front to the back, while the BMW X7 looks pretty imposing with an aggressive front end.

Both cars come with a high-quality interior, too. The X7’s cabin is covered in high-quality materials, and this face-lifted edition comes with BMW’s all-new infotainment screen and system - the same one as found in the new iX. It comes with a number of physical buttons, and almost most controls are managed within the screen. The Range Rover also has an all-new infotainment system, coupled with a large infotainment screen on the dash. It has more physical buttons than the BMW, but unfortunately, there are a couple of bits of plastic trim to be found.

Both cars come with various engine options, and the range-topper in both is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. However, while the Range Rover can produce 523hp, BMW is slightly up on power, at 530hp.

Finally, we have the price. Naturally, neither car is cheap, but while the BMW X7 range kicks off at £85,000, the Range Rover comes in a fair bit higher, at £107,000! If you want the two cars we have here, they will cost you £116,000 and £127,000 respectively.

So which is best - the X7 M60i, or the Range Rover LWB? Let us know which you’d choose in the comments, then sit back and join Mat for this in-depth group test!

Quite the glowing review of the X7. Having the V8 Rover probably would have made the review more fair, but I'll take the win!

The engine on my Range Rover died at 24000 miles. After some fuss they gave me a new engine but I was without the vehicle for over 5 months. So it will only be BMW going forward for me.

In his 2023 x7 review, he gave shortlist rating on x7 but a buy rating on Range Rover. But now he says the x7 wins over Range Rover. But i will take the win. I own the LCI x7 and think it is definitely better than Range Rover.

I mean, if you stick with the V8 Range Rover, you get the N63 which should cure the previous RR engine woes. You just have to deal with the rest of the annoyances like electronics/infotainment.

X7 is definitely a better drivers car as well as reliability

RR is more of a status or show off car, this one is nicer for passengers though.

I would take the x7 either way just more composed car

I've never understood Range Rover. And my mom has one. I don't think it's even in the same league with any German - at all. Awful driving dynamics, awful breaks, awful performance, awful quality, awful reliability.

The RR is so way better looking on the outside and comes with the extra-ness of the RR name. Just my opinion, people love RR's. to me, Porsche and RR are like a quarter step above MB/Audi/BMW in terms of branding and the cost reflects that.

But, if you had to actually spend money on one, the BMW is objectively better, more usable, and more reliable.

My Range Rover nightmare from hell was all about faulty electronics, improper manufacturing and cheap connectors with parts in very vulnerable areas. This gave me 7 months of issues and unreliability that eventually failed on a family road trip. No way in hell even at a tremendous discount would I own one again. My wife detest the brand. RR with a German engine is still surrounded by incompetency and deplorable engineering.

The best and most important factor with Range Rover is their marketing department in product placement and perpetuating old stereotypes of wealth and privilege owning the brand.

Let’s get past the junior high hyperbole yea.

Looks awesome. Makes you feel awesome. This is what luxury brands are all about.

Just make sure you keep up with the Changs and get the latest gen.

I’ll take my X7 M50 any day over the RR. I’m reminded of this every time I sit in one of my friend’s RR when they’re not having issues with their vehicles.

Sounds like you kept it long enough for it to reach self-destruct mode. It's a standard feature on every Range Rover.

Not sure how many on this thread actually own a RR let alone 2 RR’s. I have 112,000 on my 2017 RR Supercharged Dynamic and 83,000 on my 2016 RR Supercharged Dynamic. Both are the most relaxing, elegant, mean sounding vehicles I have ever owned. I have no issues beyond recommended maintenance on both vehicles. I included pics so you know I am not one of those @$$ hats that like to troll these threads.

We’ve had both, 2017 Range Rover HSE and 2020 X7. Biggest real world differences are cost of maintenance and the sportiness of the driving dynamics. These two categories are where there is arguable the biggest differences between the two brands and vehicles. RR maintenance is exhorbitant and the float/waft of the RR ride is completely absent in the X7. There are many other differences but these are the two that stand out the most from our experiences.

Plot twist, the RR V8 is a BMW engine.

…or use the outstanding 40d. I imagine the results would have been the same, with the exception of the 4.0s 0-60 (40d mid to high 5s), the 18mpg (40d 27mpg), and an even bigger cost saving.

X7 > RR any day of the week.
