I think the issue, as I understand it, is that when you order a car in the US, you are not obligated to actually buy it when it arrives. So, if you were to order and individual car and then not take it the dealer is stuck with a car they may not be able to sell. They don't want that. They are currently experimenting in the US with Individual option on the 7 series. If that works our them maybe...just maybe, they will extended it to other models. But I would not hold your breath in the short term.

That's what I've always heard as well. Even if the customer forfeits a 10% deposit, the dealer still stuck with the car. I wonder how Porsche handles this - they've got their "Special Wishes" dept., which is similar. I've seen some seriously wacky colors (worst was a 911 in Turquoise paint with Lobster red interior, to match some football team's colors).
