335d Gearbox Swap
since the 335D tranny is designed to sustain far more torque than the 335i one ,do you think its possible to swap the trannies if the 335i engine is heavily modified( procede + ic +intake + downpipes +exhaust) .Naturally i speak about steptronic.

I read somewhere that the bolt patterns to attach a tranny to the diesel engine and gasoline engine were different... not to mention all the electronic controls. It would not be a simple swap, and would require quite a bit of custom work to be performed.

Swapping the complete gearbox is almost impossible. What is possible though is to use some of the internals from the 335d (ZF 6HP28) tranny to update some parts in the 335i tranny (ZF 6HP21). No further details yet, but U can try to ask Eugen. Check out this thread.

Gear ratios would be off. Now I know a 335d was raced at daytona a couple of years ago but o don't know what granny was used. Email BMWCCA as the article appeared in Rounded.

About a year or so ago. The D transmission is from a 4.8 x5 with a different torque converter. |

Matt Whitbread was working on using a 330d setup sourced from Europe. He has family and connections there to make it happen. Don’t hold me to it but I recall he gave a rough estimate of $3000 for the kit. The final combo between trans and the 330d diff was going to spin higher revs though.
Another guy named Grady did this to an E91 D and put roll cage and all in his track car. |
