PayPal

Has anyone ever sold their car via PayPal? Is it safe enough for large sums of money.

Comments appreciated.

Would be concerned someone would want to use that for a large sum? Friend of my sold a PS3 on a forum and the person paid via Paypal then came to collect the item. Ended up being a stolen card. PS3 gone, no recourse. Just an example....

It can be reversed I believe. So if they picked the car up after paying they can still get the money.

The fees are big especially when dealing with large sums. I think 4%.

Don't do it - fees are high & the money is easily taken back, Paypal's customer service is about as bad as it gets. Bank transfer or cash are the only ways I would entertain doing it.

Is it from Nigerian Royalty? Don't want to brag but I've got several lucrative deals on the go at the moment myself!

Yup. I got stung selling a phone. Buyer paid, came to collect the item. 10 minutes later get an email saying funds have been suspended. Turned out the "buyer" used a stolen credit card and collected. I should have read the Ts&Cs as if the item is collected the seller gets zero protection.

Post up the email. There are a lot of scams going on around buying/selling cars at the moment. Is the buyer claiming to be foreign/away on business etc?

A chap on PH had his car stolen after a viewing. The thieves swapped the guys spare key after asking to see it and came back and nicked the car!

The more people that are aware of these scams the better.

I pity the seller, having to take the hit on the PayPal fees!

Is that true?

I didn't think a BACs payment that has cleared into your account could be messed with.

I'd BUY a car with paypal (using credit card for protection), but not sell one.

Bank transfers can't be reversed once cleared (whether online or in person at the bank).

Bank Drafts (or Bank Cheques more correctly nowadays) are fine as long as you accompany the other party to their bank (pre-arranged) and witness the drawing up of the draft in your name by the bank staff and then the bank gives it to YOU not the purchaser, the bank then holds the money - its already been taken off the the purchaser, so the draft is drawing on the bank not the purchaser.

Quite safe - and if you lose it / get mugged on the way to your bank you can just get a copy re-done.

And as its traceable your bank doesn't have to notify the Police about cash transactions over £10K, which they have to under money laundering laws (i.e. to deposit over 10K cash you'll need passport / ID etc and some forms to be filled in)

Email 3
i am at sea at the moment as i am a currently at an industry exhibition and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it.and i will like you to know that i have a shipping company agent that will come for the pick up of the car after the payment so i will be glad if you can get back to me with your PayPal email id for payment now..

Classic. Can't believe you even thought this guy was serious . I had something very very similar when selling the Maserati, they ended up sending me a cheque strangely, that did arrive, but the name on the cheque was completely different to the person I'd been speaking too. Never cashed the cheque (but was bloody tempted to see what would have happened). Their chosen method of scamming is obviously now Paypal.

It's such a mean trick really, I know it's flaming obvious it's a scam, but when it's happening to you, and you're desperately trying to sell a car, it's all too easy to see the best in everyone and think 'well, this set of circumstances could happen' - luckily people are wising up to it now though (except Dougie )
