Didn't know I had HD Radio

Anyone else, like me, not know they had HD radio? Had a BMW 535d loaner yesterday which had HD radio that sounded amazing. Got home and searched until I found how to turn mine on. HK in the 535d is way better than mine in 16 M3. Why is this?

The radio sounds like ass in this car. Not sure why. HD radio in my mini sounded great. HD radio in most cars with a decent sound system sound great. HD radio in this car sounds like you're listening to it through a tin can. It's awful. It's not the sound system either because it sounds just fine through Bluetooth or connected aux.

You had to turn it on? Mine came across in HD automatically from day 1.

My understanding is that it is not automatic. If a radio station broadcasts in both HD and non HD you have to select the HD version.

I think you can change a default to only select HD radio stations. Don't quote me on that though

Yes, the box was not checked from day one.
