Pulled RF tires off... big mistake!

Just so nobody does the same thing...

I have a 2024 Xdrive40i w/21" tires. It came with Bridgestone Alenza RF tires.

I thought I was being clever by swapping them out for BMW approved Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires that are non-run flats + adding a spare. I have always felt RF tires rode worse than traditional tires.

How wrong I was! The only thing the Pirellis improved on was steering response. Everything else went downhill.... noise, ride quality, etc.

Putting the Bridgestone RF tires back on and sucking up my pride. Thankfully, tire shop offered to refund my money.

Thanks for sharing this. I am about to get rid of my Bridgestone RFs too on my X7. I did the same on my 24 X5 and replaced them with Pirelli AS Plus 3 and could not be happier! the car rode so so much better. More comfortable and quieter. Unfortunately that particular tire is not available in the 21" size on my X7 so thinking about replacing the Bridgestones with YOKOHAMA GEOLANDAR X-CV or vredestein quatrac pro+ . I have had the Vredesteins on my previous cars and they are impressive all rounders!

Your experience may be specific to the Scorpion Zeros. Can you return them? or you are stuck with them even if you are putting your Bridgestones back?

steering response should go down with non runflats- the sidewalls are inherently softer.
what pressure were the scorpions inflated to? the description of the ride after the tires were swapped make me think they were grossly overinflated, like they were pumped up to the max sidewall pressure. espeically that you felt steering response INCREASED going to non runflats.
i swapped from conti premium contact 6 runflats to conti dws 06 plus non runflat in 22s and they ride almost as compliant as my 20" snows - much smoother than the runflats. but the sidewalls are softer

When you say "BMW approved" Pirelli tires, what do you mean by that? I am not aware of a BMW star Pirelli tire in OEM size that is non run flat.

Those Bridgestones are garbage. I'm shocked that there is a tire worse than those.

I did the exact same swap on my OEM 21" wheels (square setup) and couldn't be happier with the Pirelli's (verde scorpions).

Keep in mind there is a break in period with tires, 500 miles or so, which may be why your not liking them but who knows.

Why Pirelli Scorpion Zero's? Were they recommended or were they your choice?

Here is the tire. It can only be found on the Pirelli site. Discount/Americas Tire & Tirerack do not stock them. It was special ordered through Discount Tire. It is a BMW approved non-RF tire and has the star on sidewall.....

Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season
Non RF
Part # 3965400
285/45R21 XL
Speed 113H

Tire Pressure was set a factory. Not sure why they rode worse and loud... but they did.

I just put the Bridgestones back on today and rides like she use to... smooth and quiet. Received full refund... phew!

Wow impressive (and I am glad) that you got full refund. How many miles did you drive with them? Was it hard to convince Discount Tire to take it back? what reason did you give? Asking all the questions because thats my nightmare when I change tires lol like getting a new tire that suck and not to be able to return them

Discount Tire gives you 30 day return... no questions asked. Thank god because it was almost $1,900 bucks! They gave me $175 credit per tire for the Bridgestones (1,000 miles on them).

I drove them home and back to shop... about 100 miles.

Good to know about Discount Tire. I usually order online from one of those vendors (DT, TireRack, TireBuyer) but will be more cognizant of that Discount Tire advantage. Did you have them installed at Discount too?

wow impressive! Unfortunately, closest Discount Tire is 100 miles away from me. I usually buy from TireRack and their return policy says if tire is driven on, it is not returnable

Michelin makes an all season 21 tire for the m60i square setup that are not rf and are snow rated. I have them. Insanely good. Night and day difference. I have a repair kit but also the spare in case. BMW tire guy didn’t know about them but the dealership can get them. I got mine on tire rack.

What is it called? Is it the Pilot Sport All Season 4? It is a shame they dont offer the Cross Climate 2 in that size.

vredestein makes an all weather in the needed size. 3PMSF rated
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...omCompare1=yes
its predecessor, the Quadrac Pro compared favorably against the cross climate 2.

I love the Quatrac Pro! Had it on my previous SUV and they are solid. This time, tempted about the Yokohama GEOLANDAR X-CV. I wonder how it is compared to the Vredesteins

those are basic M&S rated, not 3PMSF rated like the crossclimate 2 or the Quadtrac Pro
