Do you drift?
its been raining around here, so i went for a drive and the combination of wet roads, bmw and flooring it = fun (the road were empty and nice and spacious! ) do you guys ever feel like sliding around corners when its wet? any techniques/experience you want to share.? ps, drive responsibly and be extra careful.

I do. It´s fun. And safe if you know what you´re doing (and only do it with nobody else close).
As for technique: Turn DSC fully off. Go round corner fast. Floor it. Counter steer when sliding. Not much too it really...

Tried it out during the BMW club car control clinic when I was on the skidpad. The car slides very "predictably", meaning there are no surprises when inducing the slide and not hard to correct yourself by counter steering. Definitely should not be tried on open roads, unless you're some sort of expert. By expert I don't mean you've watched Initial-D 20 times. My friend "drifted" his car into the curb and also into $2000 worth of damage. He hit so hard his brake rotor broke and fell off.

I had a little drifting fun the other night when I woke up at 1am and decided to go for a fang in the car. It was great, and as others have said, it is very predictable.
I am waiting for run in to finish, and then I am taking the car for some real fun one night through some roads in the hills near me... can't wait!

Yeah, they are pretty safe. Though couldn't compare, the furtherest I have been into WA is Kalgoorlie.
When does your car arrive? Did you know if you get your VIN, you can track it on the W&W website (even though BMW Oz don't like you to do it)??

I didn't pay 42K for my car to risk wrecking while drifting. Seems to me there a many other ways to enjoy my e90.

that's why you should do it somewhere safe, like a driving school or emtpy parking lot it's a actually a usefull driving tool to know what to do if you were to find your car starting to spin. |

I live close to the CNF shipping headquarters and they have a giant parking lot right by 23rd. Some nights, when it's pouring rain, I'll go out and pay the old time security guard a $10 to ignore the spinning car and go have some fun. Volvo makes a good handbrake...

ok, first off... if its raining or dry and you have DTC on you ARE NOT drifting...there is a blurry line, between making noise with ur tires, going in circles without counter steering..people who tend to fall under these categories are known, or reffered to as "morons". Basically what you are doing is understeering in a circular motion, and even worst wearing out your front tires and putting stress on your suspension components. because im fully aware that most "morons" turn their wheel all the way to lock thinking its better.....anyways yeah so let the flaming begin!!! ---i love you guys.

ane example of counter stearing would be something similar to this?
- making a sharp left turn and having your tail slide out from behind you, and when the tail gets far enough back you begin turning it to the right bring the tail back behind you? i actually managed to do a 360 in my car a long time ago when the car (and more importantly) tires were new. I havent tried it since but id imagine it would be much easier now that the tires are broken in. I have noticed a huge difference in the grippiness of the car since iv worn the tires down somewhat.

The summer tires were SO grippy, it was hard to make the car slide at all unless I was going fast or it was raining and I went kinda fast.
But sliding+going fast would scare me..... So I only tried doing it whilst going pretty slow in the rain. But i just got winter tires last week, so it was much easier to do in the dry while going slow.
