Yes, one of my keys that pulls out of the fob was also covered in a thick layer of grease. Strange.

Its there to prevent any sort of corrosion. Laser cut keys have a tendency of corroding if they arent used.

Why do BMW waste the time and effort to laser cut
a key to only lock the glove department?

The key fob itself can start the car..........

The key should also be able to unlock the driver's door in case the remote of comfort access doesn't work. Seems pretty critical in case of remote failure.
Actually, my wife already needed to use it once. I have comfort access, and she thought she needed to open the car by touching the "close door" area on the handle, instead of just grabbing the handle. Needless to say that the car didn't open, but instead folded down the mirrors ... So she took the key, opened the door, alarm went off, security guard with huge dog appeared, and I got an angry call from her saying the "comfort access didn' work"

She could have just pushed the unlock button on the remote... odd.

My key was also very greasy. The electronics in my remote went bad while out of town. After opening the doors manually a few times, enough of the grease went away to become bearable. After getting back home, I had the dealer check it out and they confirmed that I simply had a "bad key", electronics-wise.

In order to order a new one, they verify both original keys, my drivers license and registration. They say this is part of the security process. Then they order the replacement fob from Germany.

Did they mention how much the cost would be if you just wanted another key and it was not under waranty?

I really should have asked that question, but I didn't.

I remember the switchblade style key from my previous VW Jetta was about $200 or so. I would expect it to be in that range. $800 sounds way overpriced.

Key Grease

The grease actually comes from inside the door locks. I found out by cleaning off my key blade then locking the door with it. Maybe the lock needs it becasue it gets used to rarely?

Seperately, the buttons on my fob stopped working after a long drive with my ipod hooked up and charging. Anything simlar happen to anyone?
