Should I get the X7 as a replacement for my X5 50e

Hello and thanks for your time. Our X5 50e is getting bought back due to HV battery issues. We really liked the idea of the hybrid but it’s been a real pain with reliability…long story. We like the X7 40i because we can get the same options plus a few extras. My question is are you guys happy with the reliability? I know issues can happen with any vehicle but are you hearing of any common problems? We don’t have plans to use the third row but the second row leg room seems much better. Would really appreciate any feed back you guys may have. Planning on ordering on Monday. Thanks Steve

Interesting. I have put 4k miles in one month on my 50e and it's been flawless. I traded my X7 in on it, for a multitude of reasons. One being you can't disable the start stop, which on the V8 it drove me nuts.

I owned two 40i X7's before the m60i and mechanically had zero issues. I would not hesitate to buy the 40i, but just realize it will be shutting off constantly. Even about a car length out when coming up on a stopped car. Then you drift in. I love the 50e because it starts out on electric and then blends in the 6 cyl so smooth you can barely tell its on. A lot of times I have to look at the battery percentage color to see if it started the engine.

The rear passenger leg room is a huge improvement over the X5. Also, the X7 is a lot quieter and has a smoother overall ride than the x5. But the X7 bobbles around and tosses your head back and forth on certain roads.

Thanks for the reply. We love the X5 50e it really is the perfect car. Ours however has been in the shop 5 times now for the same problem hv battery issues. Had it towed twice due to drivetrain malfunction message. It has 1,600 miles most put on going back and forth to dealer then them driving it after a repair. Sadly 2 other 50e’s there now as well same issue. Ours was a last week in August build. I’m going to look into that start stop issue.

I see a few folks complaining about start stop, but on my 40i both 23 and 24 models, I actually LOVE the fact that it turns off. Becomes PIN DROP quiet. The engine starts up when the car ahead starts moving or you start taking your foot off the brake, and it’s such a gentle nudge starting up that most times I don’t even notice. I have no clue what other people are experiencing but it’s one of the best parts of this car.

DHP has made the stability of the car unbelievable.

My 23 had some issues with a headlight being bad and took 4-5 months to get it actually diagnosed and then get replacement. No other issues with that car. None with new 24 either, but still under 1k miles.

Thanks for the information. I’m glad to see that DHP is an option again. I am planning on ordering it. I’m curious why did you go from a 23 to a 24?

So you would advise to choose GLE450e over X5 50e?

I don’t really have any information on the GLE 450e. We did test drive a GLE 350 and were not happy with performance and didn’t like the technology as much. I can only speak of my situation with the X5 50e it has let us down repeatedly. If you go the the X5 forum there are several reports of the HV battery issues. I know BMW will figure it out but we have to have reliable transportation.

We’ve had our 40i for about a month now, the start/stop is the smoothest I’ve ever seen in a vehicle and I don’t even notice it if the music is playing. Otherwise you just notice the silence. The start/stop in 40i’s being built today is impressive.

Bought the bmw for a luxury+sporty drive. Missed getting DHP on the ‘23 by a month… and honestly was not too impressed with the luxury/comfort of the 23. Sure it was better than my Rogue, but it didn’t feel 100k good.

So I switched to 24 literally for DHP alone. Otherwise got the exact same car. Very very happy with it now.

Honestly the most annoying part of the trade was having to pay tax twice. Not really sure why the hell you have to pay taxes on a lease, but there’s 14k down the drain

Was there anything else other than the handling from DHP that made a difference? E.G. sound insulation or otherwise?

For the most part the sounds are roughly the same. I did think I was hearing a lot of wind noise on the 23 and found a rubber strip sticking out on the hood, and then the dealer said some weather stripping by the sunroof was drying or something, which they replaced (and i hardly noticed a difference)

The DHP makes the car feel like it’s rolling around in a nice thick gel roll. Absorbs everything. There’s not a rut in the road that makes a big noise anymore… and maybe that’s not dhp but who knows.

No noticeable creaks but again, just hit 500 miles so there’s plenty of time for that

Just something to keep in mind since you described the 50e as the perfect car. You may want to consider ordering a new one. From what we are seeing, or not see I guess you could say, they have solved the issues with the valve. As far as I know, no one with a recent (last month or two) build has reported having a problem.

Thanks..We have discussed it a bunch actually but my wife is pretty gun shy at this point. It left her stranded twice. We haven’t ruled it out yet but the fact they can’t fix ours is concerning. I’m going to the dealer tomorrow to meet with the GM to see how to proceed and what our options are.

I’ve toyed hard with getting an X7 as a road trip car but wound up in an X5 40i both times. Every X7 I drove - 40i or M50i - felt like it was going to potentially flip taking a curve at speed, lots of body roll. That said, I have yet to try one with DHP - maybe that would make a difference.

We would always drive it in a four or preferably five seat configuration with the third row folded. While the cargo compartment is larger, there is the intrusion of third row armrests to contend with - it’s larger cargo area, but care would need to be taken with the arm rests. The under floor storage is smaller too.

On balance for us a loaded X5 40i made more sense than the X7; we rarely have people in the back seat. On three trips from PA to the Rocky Mountains, covering almost 20,000 miles we were comfortable, and after the first trip we had trunk and back seat Tetris dialed in so everything had its place. Good luck with the search and decision. Have fun!

Thanks for all your great advice. We just ordered a X7 to replace the X5 50e. They had a January 12 allocation available. We are going to miss it but felt we wanted a new start from the issues we were having. Hopefully this one will be more reliable.

Congrats, that is a very nicely optioned X7 40i, and welcome (soon-to-be) to the family. Our 2021 40i just turned three, and we've loved it since day 1. Other than a few electronic glitches here and there and a rear trunk problem, it's been a fun to drive and comfortable luxury SUV. You should enjoy the more spacious interior coming from the X5, but without sacrificing any performance.

Enjoy and GL!

p.s. DHP is awesome. Had it on our 540i, and knew it would be great for the X7.

Thanks! Drove one today that didn’t have DHP so can’t comment on that but the loaner I’ve had for the past 6+ weeks a new I7 has it and I love it. We did like the size better but it does seem big. I’m sure we will get used to it. Hopefully we will like the wheels haven’t seen them in person. I wanted something to break up the all black.

Here is something you need to think about. You being in Texas you will not like the start/stop that you can't disable. The AC compressor in the X7 is powered by the engine. As soon as you come to a stop your AC stops working and starts blowing lukewarm humid air. In your 50e the AC compressor is electric.

EXACTLY. one of the top reasons I took a loss and traded in my X7. The car is/was a luxury purchase for me and it pissed me off. Why hate something every time you get in it? Others may be fine with it, I was not. The 50e has been great so far. If they put out a PHEV X7, I will definitely buy one.

It should be available in August of 27.

Ya I’ve been reading that. Hopefully it will be manageable for us. Honestly at this point I’ll just take a car that will actually get us to the destination and not leave us stranded.) Maybe it’s a good thing that we changed the color to alpine white.

If you just barely lift your foot off the brake the engine will restart and cold air will blow again. Kind of silly but also not that big of a deal…

I guess if you use the auto hold feature it could be annoying… but I never use that.
