How do I remove 335i grill 'fins'

I like the blacked-out lower grill look and would like to remove the 'fins' circled in red:

(seen here half way through the AE swap)

I'm hoping they can just be removed and put back later if I want. Otherwise... cover them with matte black vinyl?

There's a DIY.

"First, remove the finisher rods from the car. The centre one comes off quite easily if you just push it up. The side ones are a pain, I hooked a right-angled pick and just pulled from the centre to the outside - didn't break any tabs - but took quite a lot of force!"

Search around for "finishing rods" and you'll find a lot of info; be aware that the grills are not finished behind the rods, so you'll want to replace your silver rods with black ones from Tischer.

Let me know if you want the OEM black ones... it does NOT look good without them.

I have an extra set in good condition, I swapped them out of a 2007

PM if interested

What about black vinyl - anybody try that? Does it look OK?

Why does it look bad - wrong color behind or...? I could always paint the grills black if it's just a color thing.

Just paint them...whole lot easier, less effort, and cheaper.

I realized that I still had the leased-car mentality (just turned in my first lease, leasing is not for me) - but I bought this car! As long as I don't void the extended warranties, why not do what I want!

I found the pics of what they look like under the fins - not pretty.

I'm leaning towards blackout tape or vinyl for now; I might paint them later if I think I can remove them without breaking things. Any other tips for removing the rods without breaking the tabs?

Thanks for the help!

Edit: Matte black or gloss black? I live in BugWorld so I will be scrubbing off bug gutz on a regular basis.
