My sunglasses tray thread
So I decided to order the sunglasses tray today - they said I could collect it tomorrow afternoon (yaY) so I hope it's there when I go get it!
Anyways, got one or two questions: 1. Which screw driver do I need to install it? Where could I get it from (hardware shop? BMW only?) What does it look like? What size? 2. Seeing as I lose the cigarette lighter socket in the ashtray - could I put my cigarette lighter (the actual heating element) in my arm rest? Would it cause damage if I decide to use it one day? It'll be quite exciting working on my car - it'll be the first propper screw and driver work I will be doing :-) Thank to the DIY here, I am confident....lets hope it goes well!! |

Thanks, I saw that thread
It doesn't state what screw driver to use to undo the torx-20 screws, what it looks like or where I would get it from and it doesn't answer my other question about the cigarette lighter jobbie Thanks for your help though/... |

i'm not sure I'd use the cigarette lighter (heater thingy) in the power point in the arm rest. From what I've seen on other cars (not BMWs admittedly) the power points are not rated for the current draw of the lighter.
Actual lighter ports usually use heavier wiring and the receptacle itself is rated for higher temperatures. But I'm not sure if BMW uses the same wiring and receptacles in the armrest or not. |

So I installed the sunglasses tray today. It took less than 10 mins (thanks to the DIY). Pulling the trim out was harder then I expected, but I managed quite well! The sunglasses tray is surprisingly big. It's deeper, wider, and taller than the ashtray. I'm sure many non-smokers would like something like this. I had no use for the ashtray...but the handy storage from this tray will come in use!!! I might not even use it for sunglasses!! |

How does the shift boot cover fit in to the center console trim cover? I'm not clear on how to remove the shift boot cover. Do you just pull it out? If so how do you get it back in?

Do you mean you want to try to just plug the cig lighter into the Aux power outlet in hopes of using the cig lighter? Or do you mean you want to replace the Aux power outlet next to the Aux In jack with the cig lighter socket so you can use the cig lighter? Or do you mean you want to add the cig lighter socket to the armrest in addition to the aux power outlet thats already there next to the Aux In jack? If so, would you be drilling your own hole somewhere in the armrest for the cig lighter? The only reason I could see for keeping the cig lighter socket is for the additional power outlet for more devices (option #3). Using the cig lighter in a car without an ash tray doesnt make much sense. |
