Cosmetic mods and accessories

Here is a list of cosmetic mods accessories since taking delivery of my X7 and how long it took to install.

Cosmetic mods
1. Shadow chrome grille - OEM part no. 51138745730. 5 minutes.

2. M style mirror cap - aftermarket direct replacement of the backing cap. 5 minutes.

3. Black out rear chrome bar - aftermarket 152cm x 30cm vinyl wrap. 30 minutes.

4. Black out exhaust tips - aftermarket exhaust tip that goes over existing chrome exhaust tip. 2 minutes.

5. Black out X7 badge - 1 minute

6. Black out door latch cap - hides the silver latch. 1 minutes each.

Protections
1. Ceramic coating - professionally applied on day 1. 5 hours.

2. Door sill scratch protectors - aluminium plates that goes over the plastic door sills. 2 minutes each.

3. Door sill scratch protectors - this is to protect the door sills from abuse by my kids' shoes. 5 minutes each.

4. Black door edge protector - protects the edge of doors from rubbing against walls/other cars when parking in tight spaces. 2 minutes each door.

Interior accessories
1. Rear trunk liners - these are suitable for both 5 seat and 7 seat configuration. 1 minutes.

2. Dash cam with integrated rear camera - The dash cam is a screen that fits over the rear view mirror. Rear camera requires running a cable from the rear view mirror along the edge of roof lining to the back of the car. I have the rear camera mounted inside on the top of the rear window. The hardest part was threading the cable through rear quarter panel. The benefit is able to see rear traffic across about 5 lanes. About 3 hours.

3. Phone cradle with wireless charging - Power for the cradle is from an adapter that plugs into the OBD socket. 15 minutes.

4. All weather floor mats. All 3 rows. 5 minutes.

5. Front screen curtain - Theses are mounted on the passenger side and can deploy/retract in seconds. 5 minutes.

6. Sunglasses holder - 5 minutes.

7. Front seat gap fillers - 1 minute

8. Tissue holder - 1 minute

9. Rubbish bin - 1 minute

I like the sunglasses holder that replaced the "oh shit" handle on the driver side of the car. I did that mod on my M3 as there was no good place to put the sunglasses in that car. I am still going back and forth on doing the same thing in the X7 as there is a driver side glove box that could serve that purpose, but admittedly it is not as convenient as the "oh shit" handle spot. I would like to see more details of that part as the one you have looks like it integrates pretty well with the X7 headliner (better than most).

I decided to go the OEM route on the rear chrome strip (purchased the OEM shadowline piece), the shadowline exhaust tips and the M performance side mirror caps. More expensive, but I had some long term quality control concerns going the route you took with those upgrades based on some previous experience with other cars and similar parts. But hopefully they work out well for you in the long run.

Your X7 looks good with those cosmetic upgrades. Are you also considering the mud flaps? I have been eying those for a while as well. BMW does not offer anything, but the aftermarket options don't look that bad - but I am not convinced yet since I have not seen them actually installed on an X7. But they are not that expensive, ~$80 or so for a complete front/rear set.

Yes - would be super helpful. I'm particularly interested in the trunk liner. Love the look, and the design looks particularly innovative with it "stacking" when the seats move to the "up" position.

It replaces the grab handle on the headliner on the front driver side - or what I affectionately call the "oh $hit" handle...

I just did this one in my G05.

Takes about 10 minutes to do the swap and frankly, I don't miss the grab handle.

That's awesome. You removed the handle and how did you attach the case?

The last picture in the Amazon product page Is the instruction video. You don't need the funny L-shaped tool that he has, all you need is a small jeweler style flathead and a Phillips head.

I've seen a picture here of the X7 badges moved to the middle line of the trunk. Has anybody seen this pic? I'd like to see that again

Getting ready to do the same. I knew this would look good and you proved it.

How do you feel about the Quad Design Exhaust trims piece? I am still deciding because it doesn't look right to me with the actual exhaust pointing in the middle. Wish they make one without the middle divider. Perhaps they look better in person ??

I would've preferred twin tailpipe, but afaik the covers only come in quad designs. If you only want twin pipes, you'd need to replace them with OEM parts, jmciver did an excellent write up.

For me, I just wanted to cover up all the shiny chrome bits.

Unfortunately Taobao is only available in Chinese. Some BMW generic items can be found on aliexpress but most of the X7 specific items are not listed on aliexpress.

The sunglass holder is fairly generic, should be pretty easy to find it in black. I haven't missed the handle bars as I probably to don't drive fast enough to ever need to grab onto it.

I have seen your OEM parts route, they definitely look better and cleaner.

I haven't considered mud flaps before.
