Since it has not been brought up yet, I will say that your children's ages should probably be a consideration. If they are under 8, then I think they/you will get some value from it for a few years, but in my case, once they are "tweeners" (10&up) they will probably want to spend more time on their own tablets or phones (or even my phone).

With 9 and 12 year olds, we opted out for the first time in years. And, lets face it, this trend is not changing. We're past the point (age) where we "give them" their ipads when leaving the house. They have them in tow. For $2500 or whatever it cost, we can buy multiple ipads, be future proofed, and have change to spare. Its not like the RSE means the kids won't have these ipads. So, for us, it was a bit redundant to have both. If you are financing or leasing, then your paying interest on this to boot.

On the counter, you'll probably recover some part of the $2500 at resale, if RSE isn't totally obsolute by then. I think it will be someday.

As for interacting with navigation, they still can with IOS devices in various capacities (through bmwconnected app or carplay).

Hi guys, I'm about to buy a X7 with the rear seat entertainment packet but I'm wondering are those screens detachable?

I am pretty sure they are, just possibly not "easily" detachable. All X7s come with the provision to attach screens, the OEM ones or aftermarket with the appropriate adapters, on the back of the driver and passenger seats (at least US spec cars do). For the RSE screen, you may need a small wrench (or some type of tool) to remove them as I don't think they were intended to be removed on a regular/routine basis. But the dealer (or you) should be able to verify this, especially if there is an X7 on the lot with RSE for you to look at.

I see the question differently. I mean it’s all removable with tools etc.
It’s not detachable or removable by design intent meaning you can’t disconnect them and stash them away when leaving the vehicle or passing them to the third row.

I don't disagree with you on that assumption based on the OP's original question (and I don't have RSE to personally confirm myself). But my real point was for the OP (and others looking at this thread with a similar question) to consider taking a look for himself (or at least ask the dealer) as the removal of the screen may not be that cumbersome - even if it might not be designed to be detachable. It is all about making an informed decision .

Yes. There’s more info searching around.
Fire stick etc.

It’s actually a great system. My X7 came with it, I wasn’t going to buy it as an option because these things get pretty outdated with the pace of tech, but this system is pretty good (when you have kids that can interact with it responsibly lol).

Somehow I keep getting navigation triggers to go to Panda Express lol.

Thanks guys, I'll have to take a good look at them when/if the car comes to me. I'm pretty sure I have no real use for them so taking them out for good is an option.

We opted not to order the entertainment package on our build for a couple of reasons:
  1. At age 9 and above, our kids will soon outgrow the need the consatantly have screens during trips
  2. Use of our own devices combined with the universal tablet holder (PN: 51952408224) will ensure future proofing and a cleaner look for the second row when not needed
  3. The money we saved on the entertainment system was better suited towards a set of winter tires for the X7
It's very subjective. If you think you're going to use it a lot, abosultely order it. The systems is second to none in comparison to other manufacturers. But if your kids are approaching close to 10 years old, seriously consider just using tablets + holders. Good luck!

Ha ha, I would like to know how you plan to pull that one off. Not unless you enforce dictator like rules for when your kids are in the car when they are older could I see that happening in today's world of the need for infinite screens/devices every where you go. My current 12yo and 18yo hardly put their devices down, while in the car or not - and it has been that way ever since these devices (smart phones, mini game systems, etc) became available and popular. Good luck .....

That said, I do agree with your points #2 and #3, even though the the RSE seems like a well developed and integrated system.

No dictatorship required, mine are pretty good with screen time and like the ability to remove their tablets and continue watching movies/playing inside if needed.
