What a cool idea/invention. I've never seen them used before.
Those dollies are necessarily on hand in every New York City valet parking garage for when a customer inevitably leaves their car in the drop off area and walks away with the key fob in their pocket. Instant $200 fee when you arrive and want your car back.

Maybe in NY they have them - but in other parts not so much.On the road - good luck finding a tow company with one. When you call - you need to ask for a flat bed for 4x4 SUV and heavy duty dollies to support SUV weight.

GoJak SUV G7016 - is the model number - $379 a piece - you need 4 plus a rack $100 to hold them. $1600 + set to have in your garage for emergencies - all for not having Neutral release mechanism in modern cars - WHY ?

OP, did you ever hear back from the dealer about what may have caused the failed OTA software update attempt that left your X7 stranded?

I talked to a BMW Genius the other day and he said that bricking the car was one of the reasons they delayed the software updates here in the US. I told him I wasn't talking about previously. I was talking about within the last few weeks. He seemed surprised that anyone recently has bricked their car doing an OTA update.

I guess we'll find out just how prevalent this issue is. Hopefully, it's just a one off and not something we see happening regularly.

Well, my new software is already on the phone and my vehicle is begging me to do the update. Will not do it until I have lots of time, not going anywhere and sitting in my own driveway.

Got car back. Engineers from BMW factory drove down and found that the OTA had a conflict with the left high beam assist module. After the new update rebooted the system, there was a fatal error due to the left high beam error which locked up the car. They replaced the entire left laser headlight unit and module and restarted the software and it worked. They ran it threw multiple days of tests. I got an update from the lead engineer and VP of customer service from New Jersey daily. It was amazing customer service for our 2 week old 2020 X7 M50i. They also threw in some amazing perks. No issues so far...fingers crossed.

That's great news!

I'm glad to hear that BMW came through and took care of the problem. That's the type of service I expect from BMW at these price points. Enjoy the new ride!

Wow, you are lucky to have gotten that level of support / attention from BMW. On my then 2-month old G05 X5's first software update (not OTA, but dealer) the car was bricked for 3 weeks and no one from the dealership or corporate seemed to care. I had to raise hell and start emailing corporate managers in New Jersey to get some attention on my car to finally replace some hardware component. Only perk they offered me was a couple hundred dollars in exchange for a ridiculous NDA and totally unacceptable waiver of rights that I refused to sign so ended up with nothing.

It is interesting that a failed software update would actually "brick" a component in the car and require replacement. That is like doing a software update on your home computer and a hard drive or memory module fails and required replacement. Hard component failures like that just does not normally happen with modern electronics, even for those designed to work in the harsh automotive environment. It would not surprise me that your laser light module was probably fine, and could have just been "reset" using factory BMW equipment. But due to the unique nature of this fault, and because the X7 is still very new with not much real world maintenance failure data/history, BMW wanted the laser light module to do a more thorough investigation of what may have gone wrong - which is not a bad thing.

Regarding the customer service the OP received, that is what is supposed to happen. I recently received a similar, very positive level of customer service from BMW for a different electronic issue with my X7. It is unfortunate that sometimes customer service falls below the quality that it should. But then, you usually hear about the bad stuff, and not the good examples of what customer service is supposed to be - which probably happens most of the time.

I'm glad I saw this post. I saw the OTA software on my wife's X7 yesterday as I was driving my son to his baseball practice. I decided not to proceed with the update because I wasn't sure what it encompassed. Having read this post, I will just let the dealer update the software when it's time for its service.

I wouldn't let this one incident deter you from doing the OTA update as it seems to be an isolated incident. Getting it done at the dealer, while it should be easy to do especially in conjunction with other dealer services, may not always be that easy or convenient for you (but YMMV of course with your dealer). The only precaution I would recommend, and one I intend to follow, is to do the update when at home and in your driveway or out front your home. That way if something were to go wrong, at least you are at home.

In BMW wisdom they got rid of the neutral release mechanism , so the flatbed tow truck couldn't tow it. It requires a a repo type truck and lifts your car on top of casters and pulls it to the dealership. WTF!! Now our brand new car (2weeks old) is sitting a shopping center parking lot. My 6 th BMW, never had a problem until now. It seems the German engineers are loosing their minds that a software update can kill your car and strand you in the middle of nowhere.

What if the car bricks in the garage? How would they get it out? This makes not want to do OTA ever again

That is why in my recommendation a few posts up I specifically said "at home and in your driveway or out front your home" to cover that situation .

Are we talking about actual OTA updates of the software or simply a Map update? I ask because I've been notified of a Map update but never a full software update.

The OTA update for the entire car. Map updates (which are just the regional updates that you select online at the ConnectDrive portal) are separate and as far as I know, have not caused any issues when updating while out and about. I have done several map updates in both my X7 and M3 without issue.

The map update happens automatically without owner/driver input.
