New on BMW ConntectedDrive USA: Traffic Camera Information

BMW Traffic Camera Information

Added safety in road traffic: BMW Traffic Camera Information alerts you to fixed and mobile roadside speed checks and red light cameras.

WHAT IS TRAFFIC CAMERA INFORMATION?
With the Traffic Camera Information function, you be confident that you're on the safe side when driving your BMW: This service reliably warns you of mobile and stationary speed cameras. Whether your speed is being checked or there is a red light camera - Traffic Camera Information makes sure you are alerted in advance about upcoming traffic enforcement cameras.
  • Profit from advanced safety in road traffic, less stress and lower costs.
  • You will be alerted in advance about mobile and stationary speed checks and red light cameras on the road.
  • With the help of visual warnings on the dashboard or in the head-up display, you can easily read all information while driving.

ALWAYS INFORMED OF SPEED CAMERAS IN ADVANCE
Speed cameras are installed to improve safety in road traffic. They help to protect more vulnerable road users, which is why they are often placed in front of kindergartens, schools, nursing homes or hospitals. Sometimes they provide noise protection near residential areas.

For the driver, however, they have become a nuisance: The flashing red light can dazzle the driver, causing them to brake abruptly or even jerk the steering wheel. To ensure you never again miss a speed camera, your BMW is now available with a warning function: Traffic Camera Information alerts you in advance of stationary and mobile speed cameras and red light cameras along your route.

Traffic Camera Information reminds you to drive carefully, ensuring added safety and more attentiveness in road traffic. The service protects you and other drivers against unpleasant surprises and uncontrolled responses. Last but not least, the Traffic Camera Information saves you unnecessary costs and stress. All warnings are conveniently displayed on your dashboard screen or the head-up display.

REQUIREMENTS FOR USE
The Traffic Camera Information service is available for all BMWs with Live Cockpit Professional that have software version 7/2019 or more recent installed.

How to check if Traffic Camera Information is available for your vehicle:

Option 1: Select "Check availability" at the top of this page then enter your vehicle identification number. If this service is not available, the hardware you need is not installed in your vehicle.

Option 2: Log in with your registered vehicle and return to this service. It will then be automatically displayed at the top of the page whether the service is available for your vehicle. If this service is not available, the hardware you need is not installed in your vehicle.

Testing the New Traffic Camera Info Feature

Took the G05 for a spin from 495 Outer to 395 Inner Loop and exited on 3A SR-236 East, Duke Street where there's a red light camera was located.

The Red Light Camera warning came up as I was on the exit ramp. Earliest warning from traffic camera was:

0.25mi then 1000ft, 800ft, 600ft, 400ft, 300ft, 200ft depending on your rate of speed

Visual warning is prominent and shows up in HUD with distance countdown to traffic enforcement:
  1. Large camera icon
  2. Traffic enforcement type - Red Light Camera
  3. Distance countdown

UPDATE:
Enabling Traffic Camera Information app in iDrive 7 will add a new a new Route Warnings in Display Options where you can either display the alert in HUD or in Live Cockpit Pro:

Navigate to Car > Settings > Displays > Head-up Display > Route Warnings > Display Location > Select Head-up display or Instrument Panel

Update:
Took a leisurely drive through North Bethesda where there's plenty of speed cameras. In all, the system identified all of the cameras with HUD notifications between 0.25mi to 800ft before the cameras and provided a 150 to 200ft range for you to immediately slow down.

Well, I would tell you as I live in the DMV and there are traffic cams all over this area. But it looks like BMW pulled it from the Connected Drive store. I tried to get it yesterday when I first saw the post. It was up on the site, even featured at the top of the page, but the site was having issues with their online credit card payment service. So I called them to pay over the phone, same issue in their payment system persisted. I just checked this morning, and the option to purchase it is no longer available.

Not surprised BMW pulled it as the customer service rep told me that multiple people had called her to get it before me, but the same credit card payment system issue prevented the transactions from going through. I guess the number of people wanting to get it overloaded their system ? Definitely an embarrassing moment for the BMW IT folks......

It's been very efficient with the red light cameras in Northern Virginia.

Will report more when I get a chance to drive through Maryland and especially DC which there's a f'ing lot of speed cameras.

Fantastic
I got it last night few min after your post.
Haven't tried it yet, but will surely share.

Truth to be told I'm a bit skeptical about it, but let's see.

I’m sorry I’m a little confused about what this actually does? Does this only work with red light cameras and speed traps that are not by the cops? Down here in Houston, I’m not sure we have those. Is there something else I am missing?

Works in states, counties and cities where traffic enforcement cameras - red light and speed cameras - are present. Th system does not alert on law enforcement monitored speed traps.

If you primarily drive in cities that don't have traffic enforcement cameras then it's a feature that you wouldn't need to subscribe to.

People on the forum are reporting it's gone from the store. Seems it was there for less than a day.

I see it under ConnectedDrive Services, click on details and scroll down. It's $25 for 15 months but as I believe it was reported above, the credit card payment option is not going through.

It doesn't accept AMEX. I tried my Visa and that worked too. Thanks

Yup, seems like the BMW IT people fixed their glitch. I saw the app back up on the site this morning too and just ordered it. There was an initial page error on one of the shopping cart pages before completing the purchase, but a page refresh cleared it. Now lets see how long it takes for the app to get to my X7.....

I just tested on my X5. I pressed the connected button, loaded the store, waited and after about a minute I got a pop up that there was new data privacy options. I went to settings and chose all options and the app was there when I went back to my apps.

Do you run Waze at all (either through CarPlay or on an Android phone)? Waze traffic cam info in the DMV area has been pretty accurate during my time here, except for a small stretch on I-295 in DC between I-695 and Rt-50 - Waze has more traffic cams than what are actually installed on that stretch of road. It will be interesting to see how the BMW service compares to Waze....

I rarely run Waze or through CarPlay, and ja it does have pretty accurate traffic cam info. I'll launch it if there's a new destination I need to drive to but primarily stick to BMW's nav. I'm taking a drive around today in MD to see how well BMW's service works.

It will be interesting to see how this compares to Waze. Also how does a forthcoming BMW maps compare to the tech giant maps. Here's to hoping they BMW offering is great because it sure is nice to just have it there as part of the car.

As a sidenote I'm going to take my car for a drive down to a main intersection here on Long Island that's had a red light camera since at least when I first got my license in the late 90s. I will be curious to see if that one shows up as a litmus test.

In my M3 I run Waze exclusively via CarPlay, both for Navigation and alerts (traffic cams and police). The BMW Navigation system in iDrive 6 is nice, but Waze is better and also looks better on the smaller 8.8" screen in the M3 IMHO. In the X7, I run the BMW navigation with Waze running in the background, via CarPlay, for the alerts. The iDrive 7 Navigation is better than iDrive 6 (but still not as good as Waze or Google Maps IMHO). However, I like the iDrive 7 interface better, especially on the large screen.

If the BMW traffic cam service ever added police alerts, like Waze (and now Google), I would be tempted to ditch Waze altogether as the performance gap between BMW basic navigation functionality in iDrive 7 and Waze/Google is getting smaller IMHO.
