Dangerous and problematic risk for Vanos
Hello everyone, today I want to talk to you about a problem that I just noticed when I replaced my rocker cover gasket. On the left bench, on the vanos adjustment pinion, the cover now holds the return spring shifted, in particular one which moves by hand. After some research on the internet I could see that it was happening to some S65 ... even certain that we did not have the chance to notice it soon enough with big damage on the engine. Obviously I do not plan to close everything like her. So my questions are many:
* How is hiding able to shift to point? * Or / who can I find used van adjusters in good condition * But above all what is the procedure for replacement, knowing that I am not an expert in mechanics Picture in atachement |

If I recall, there isn't any parts for the S65 vanos and you have to buy the entire vanos assembly? deansbimmer can probably answer your question better.

You must replace the entire adjuster. Individual components are not available. The plastic caps are not replaceable. We are in R&D phase for a product to provide replacement caps, since they are the first part to die on these adjusters.
Replacement of the adjuster is not DIY if you're not well versed in the S65. It should be reserved for the experienced mechanic with the correct S65 timing special tools, which are required for the job. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...ontrol/OnJq3Ve |

There are kits to maintain/fix vanos for E36 and E46 non-M and M, so I am not surprised the E90 could benefit from one as it ages. It is great deansbimmer is making a part for this.

I will replace the pulleys on the bench where they are defective, for the others I wait until a correction exists while they are still in good condition

What would happen if the cover is shifted/rotated like OP`s first picture but not yet completely fall off. Also can he rotate it back to alignment? |

There are retention grooves that place the notches in the cover. If it has shifted out of alignment then the cover has been compromised. You may be able to rotate it back, but I'd probably not touch it as the risk of you breaking the brittle plastic will be very high. |

Any replacement cover that requires you loosening the Vanos' central bolt will require performing the engine timing/checking process as outlined by BMW.
We are no longer pursuing plastic covers. For a couple of years we've been making metal covers for in-house jobs. We will be marketing these to the public. |

Edit: looking closer I realize they don't clip on, assume washer style using the centrum bolt. Last edited by Helmsman; 12-15-2021 at 03:19 PM.. |

Hi guys,
Was there ever a final answer to this? just want to make sure I sort this out as a preventative thing. Are metal covers available yet? Cheers Shanan |

Yes, we have our steel variant. Ours is captured under the central bolt so will never have the chance of coming loose or coming off altogether. This is the method preferred by most professional S65 engine builders. They're $399 for a set of 4.
