CEL at 4k RPM's
Hey Guys,
So I don't post here very often but I ran into a little issue and I want to get your guys take on this. I was getting on to the highway today and when getting up to speed I hit around 4k RPM's when all of a sudden the car sputtered, a CEL came on, and the car ran really rough. Acceleration seemed rough like the car was running in limp mode or something (if that's even the right term). I get off the highway and pull over to the side and turn off the car. I checked under the car and the engine bay for any fluid leaks and there don't seem to be any. I turned the car back on and now the CEL is gone and the car seems to be running as normal again. I revved it a little to see if I hear any mechanical damage and there doesn't sound like there is any. I've been noticing lately too (before the incident) that if I push the car a little the power seems to drop off/flatten out around 4k RPM's then pick back up again. I was able to drive the car home and plan to take it to the dealership tomorrow. I don't have much experience with repairs but from the experience I do have this sounds like it might be a ECU/Tuning issue. The car is bone stock with the exception of springs and audio equipment. The car is at 65k so it's out of warranty so I wanted to get your guys take on this before I go into the dealership. |

I suggest investing in a bt cable in order to pull codes, in addition to doing other cool stuff. It'll help you from being hosed by the dealer. To answer your question, sounds like coils or plugs going out on you. With the bt cable, you would know which cylinder was misfiring.

Yea your right I should probably invest a BT cable if I decide to keep the car long term. So you think it's the coils/spark plugs? If so that shouldn't be too bad of a fix.
Anyone else have any ideas? Last edited by shaun671; 03-16-2013 at 12:21 PM.. |

Coils, plugs, and injectors all display the same symptom. Pulling the codes will help with choosing which direction you want to go in. I would start with replacing all plugs first if you're still on originals. Swapping coils to determine the failed one is cheaper than replacing all six. The dealer may want to start with injectors as they are the most expensive out of the group, but not always the root cause.

Initially they told me it was the ignition coil so they replaced it then the next day same problems came up. This time it was injectors and an O2 sensor. Dealer scammed me for warranty deductible twice!
Here you go take a look. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=772935 |

thankfully i was under warranty.
Take it in to an independed bmw mechanic. Dealer will charge you quite a bit for the work. Once you scan her youll have a better idea. There is a user on here currently parting out an engine and he's selling injectors, maybe even coils. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=806057 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=806556 Last edited by Wolf 335; 03-16-2013 at 01:42 PM.. |

Took the car to a shop near my house for a diagnostic read and they don't see any error codes thrown...weird. Car seems to be running fine again and I got on it a little bit earlier to see if I can recreate the error code and nothing. Maybe it was just a misfire and the car shut the cylinder down....is that even possible?
