cost of maintenance

It is interesting that al the countries where you buy a BMW you are liable
for maintenance and service.

In South Africa if you buy a BMW a 5 year maintance or 100 000km plan are included in the price of the car. You only pay for tires and wheel balancing.

If anything breaks you take it to the dealer and they fix it.

But what most places dont have but the Motorplan here has is

if anythig on the car breaks or fails in the 5 year/100,000km it will be replaced/fixed by BMW for free

and

All service ietams are covored( eg brake pads, clutches, spark plugs, oil, filters, bulbs ect ect )

The only things not covored are damaged caused by owner or in a crash and tires

I think that's what Athos is implying, here in the US the same plan is extended for 4yrs/50000 miles. Of course, the big catch is that the maintenance comes with a "normal wear and tear" clause which could be used negatively by some dealers.

Would be interesting to see what the USA plan covers, the UK plan I have heard about only covers servicing

The plan was unique to South Africa when it started in 1995.

2 examples of what it covers are

1) a Friends 4,5 year old E46 320i blew its expansion tank in traffic. The radiator, expansion tank and left light and foglight (damaged by the water) were all replaced for free. The car was also towed for free

2) Another guys 4 year old M coupe suddenly died, and they replaced the alternator and a wiring harness , aswell as changed his clutch because it was almost worn out and his brake discs and pads, all for free

Any of those 2 problems on any other make would hae cost a fortune to fix

Every time I asked for clarification and specific details of what the BMW Maintenance Program in the USA covers, I was given the line that "it covers everything except the tires".

So when the time comes for service and they say anything about something besides the tires not being covered, the dealer and BMWNA will sure as hell hear it from me.
