Ugh. I have to believe this isn't the approach, but I think you're right. Mercedes' approach is a 4 banger with an electric motor that in part spools the boost on the turbo. These approaches are so heavy and take away so much from the driving experience. My hope is bmw can sell enough of these PHEVs and EVs as well to keep the M3 non hybrid.

I'm growing very tired of the "pig from angry birds" look. Why must BMW continue with these designs?

You could add the G-Wagon in there, I'd wager that BMW had their eyes on that market.
I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would buy this over a G Wagon. BMW is in for a big surprise if they think they are going to take sales from that. Hell I'd take a normal G550
over the XM.
The Gwagen was still cool 15 years ago when it was still largely unchanged from the 1970s and a pretty rare sight.

Nowadays they're the Honda Civic for rich mommies and while I respect the heritage I wouldn't be caught dead near one. They got way too cool and the trend has naturally consumed its own cachet.

You are in the minority.
You've provided a really thoughtful counterpoint and have consequently changed my mind on who the Gwagen is marketed to. Well played.
Right, you are the expert on this with your two old cars.

You wouldn't be caught dead near one because you are about $90k short, brah.

They're differentiating one model from a another, so one is an angry squirrel, one an angry pig, an angry whale, and so on…

On the flip side they don't look like eggs or melting bars of soap (Merc) or different lengths of the same sausage (Audi). So there's that.

Design completely aside for a moment here:
BMW is still doing an incredible job at offering a product that is comparatively less than 80-90% the MSRP of P-Cars, Mercedes or other high priced brands despite the same quality of materials, speed, power and driving dynamics. $160k may seem like a lot for a BMW but it's still a "discount price" compared to what you would have to spend to get equal characteristics in the category above.

The brand marketing has achieved a feeling where you are getting 95% of the same car for 80% of the price compared to the other brands.

I agree for the most part - BMW doesn't have market segmentation like VW group, apart from RR and Mini but even then they're not the same segmentation as, say, a Urus/Cayenne/SQ7/Q7/Atlas - they focus on a high quality line up and have the volume to support it. They differentiate within the brand for sure, and this is testing the upper limits. I think the differentiation in the designs is refreshing. I like that my M3 looks so different than my X5. And that an X7 and XM are very distinct designs. But we can question the design cues of the new M2 and the XM all we want.

I simply disagree BMW is delivering the "same quality of materials, speed, power and driving dynamics" as Porsche. BMWs are priced less than Porsche because they have to be. BMWs are a tier below.

Depends which Porsche, and which options are ticked. For the price point of an M3, BMW is a clear winner - obviously - with the exception of the CSL form or with a ridiculous ADM

I didn't say that. I said 95% of it. Maybe even make it 90% if it makes you feel better. The point is "You get a good chunk of the experience for significantly less than if you bought the Porsche". I agree BMWs are a tier below and the XM is also a tier below the Cayenne Coupe GT which is a tier below the Urus; But so are the prices.

Or to phrase it differently, I can keep up off the line with the $200k+ crowd for $40k less. Always has been the selling charm of BMW since the days of old. I remember in Germany in the 1990s BMW M cars were called the P-car killer for the middle class. It's all just subjective and marketing though.

Porsche doesn't want to compare itself because they want you to feel special and elaborate. Marketing. BMW wants you to think it's the ultimate driving machine. Marketing. Mercedes wants you to think you're part of your boss's boss crowd. Marketing. It's all BS - at the end of day drive what you like and move on.
