I think I love this thing. I got to see several at the performance center a couple weeks ago and talking with the factory tour guide about it was super cool. Those folks are super pumped to be manufacturing the XM in Spartanburg.

These are not good reviews, and it doesn’t bode well for the new M5. Sounds like the powertrain/brake combo is a mess.

Correct on most points except the very high wages bit. The gap between high and middle is massive (esp in the past 2 years where our healthcare attracted a ton of super wealthy people over) hence the skewed stats. Also housing is very expensive too.

I reckon it wouldn't have been slammed so bad if it wasn't M's "hero" car, like a BMW X8 or X9 coupe or something. Making it their halo car is a slap in the face of all who love the brand. Which other sporty marque has a frigging SUV as their flagship?

Flagship hero cars are meant to elevate the brand and reinforce what the brand stands for and its heritage (LFA, 918, even the E-tron GT), not throw everything under the bridge in search of sales. I reckon it was the idea of marketing and accounts to badge it XM instead of X9 or X7 coupe. Imagine if Porsche, lambo or Ferrari made their flagship an SUV. Even Rolls Royce doesn't do it.

This car was not built by people who love M cars nor driving (they prob moved over to hyundai N) . This car was made by Google spreadsheets, "focus groups" and tiktok influencers. I hope it flops.

Not sure which review to watch. I just know that I won’t be watching the Straight Pipes one because of the stupid ass the-world-is-ending face in the thumbnail. It’s about as cringey as the side trim accent on the XM.

What kind of brand has a mixed reviewed influencer SUV as their halo car?

Mercedes had the SLS. Audi has the R8. Acura has the NSX. Lexus had the LFA. Cadillac had the Cellestiq. Do better BMW.

This is a work of marketing genius. I watched Watson’s video. When you have been visually abused, affronted and damaged by this, you suddenly see the new M2 come into the video. Suddenly it looks sensational. Words I never thought I’d say. But it really did.

I must be the only one that really likes this car... especially in black with the nice red interior.

I think this car is meant to be ridiculous and it does that REAL well... it competes vs a G wagon but not really because it can actually take a turn if it wants to and isn't as tall as a semi truck so far better CG metrics.

It's not a traditional full blown m car... but I hope no one expected a 6k lb suv to be that... your mad about the M badging? You should have been starting in the E90 days when the "m sport" pack ever came to be.

And like most mistakes BMW makes- they end up being massive, lucrative gains for people outside the brand to jump right in.

I suspect like the M3- they will be lower production and hard to get for years.

In my eyes it will flop when I see massive discounts. Like 20-30,000 like 7 series used to have.

Seems like a half-baked design study disguised as a halo car. Looking forward to the technology that filters down from it into better cars in the near future!

The M division is gone down hill quickly.

First, I can’t believe BMW claims anything on the car claims to be an homage to the M1. The BMW and M divisions are so focused on the past they aren’t paying attention to the here and now.

So now M has nothing to do with motorsports. It should be the ///D division for drag racing. No one really cares what a drag racing car looks like which seems to be the approach in designing the recent M models.

///M = comfortable, high tech and luxury drag racing.

Somehow Porsche continues to elevate their performance, M keeps moving further from if.

This hybrid V8 should have been released ages ago.

This split headlight design has to go.

BMW builds composite monocoques. Why doesn’t BMW build an M car with one?

An M3 - carbon monocoque and body panels, take all of the crap out of it, weighs 3k lbs, and put in a turbo hybrid 4 with a MGU-K. I’d pay $100k for that!

Or imagine if M cars had carbon monocoques? Then you wouldn’t need 100 adjustments to the car and +50lbs of bracing. BMW doesn’t interest me anymore. I’ve sat in and driven every current M
car. Not one has moved me. It’s fun in a straight line. I get in an E60 M5…it’s like HOLY F%#?!!!

I get the the feeling the XM will be even more underwhelming.

I think for all the people hating on the car’s looks should see it in person first.

Both the wife and I didn’t like the looks at first in pictures and in videos, but after seeing it in person, a white one with the black trim, we both thought it looked way better in person and overall was a cool looking aggressive vehicle. Our only beef with it was the interior didn’t justify the price and if there’s no sun roof option, im surprised for that money they didn’t give it a cf roof. But we both hated the blue one only because it had the gold trim. The gold trim looks tacky and ugly

I get it but seeing anything in person from BMW recently hasn't changed my mind. Its not kind of iffy or not sure from looking at the pics...it looks repulsive.

BMW really screwed up their design language. I've mistaken an iX for a Chevy traverse and a Rav4. Its got that stupid stripe on the c-pillar. The BMWs that do stand out...stand out for the wrong reasons. BMW did need to stray from the 90's catalog of the same car made in different lengths. They should have put a lot more thought into it. Chris Bangle is an unpopular name in the BMW community for the E65 and E60...which were ugly. But they guy who penned them was Adrian Van Hooydoonk which has moved up in the BMW design group...I think he's the head right now. Chris Bangle wasn't the one who designed the bangle butt on the 5/6/7.

I'm holding my breath that this era is a period where BMW expands their designs which leads to new innovations. I just think BMW evolved too slowly with the F-generation, panicked and now they are playing catch up resulting in the modern day disasters. Remember BMW's brand? The ultimate driving machine? They've given that up for luxury soccer mom cars. Now its a race to make the ultimate tech machine.

I've seen the car in person and am intrigued by the design. I think with a slightly modified stance, this thing will look the business.

One catch for me is the lack of panoramic moonroof. In these big SUVs, having light from above when you need it is important to maintaining the open feel. Not even having the option to eliminate the artistic headliner is a tough sell for me. I didn't miss a sunroof on my last M3 because I loved the CF roof, but on an SUV I think it's lacking.

Really not liking that there is “lag” on this s68 hybrid v8 setup, plus the fact that the batteries add a ton of weight. I sure hope the next gen m5 will fare better than this with the same powertrain setup.

Geeez ....

These reviews are brutal...but probably true. Doesn't bode well for the upcoming hybrid models.

I'm banking on better reviews for the G87! Our last best chance for a true M car.

While it might’ve been clickbaity, their review was pretty much in line with everyone else….lots of gimmicks, not cohesive.

Just spent the entire afternoon with the XM.

First, this thing has huge presence. While I was trying to capture videos/photos, people from the street were stopping to see what the XM was. Mission accomplished BMW.

There was the Cape York Green with gold trim, Black Sapphire Metallic with gold trim and Marina Bay Blue with black trim. The Marina Bay Blue was the best looking with the black trim - the gold trim doesn't do it for me. I actually hate it.

Exterior: Presence. Presence. Presence. The XM wears the new split headlight design better than the 7er and X7. It looks absolutely mean. The rest of the vehicle is disappointing for me. The side trim was a stupid design decision. The rear has this weird look because the rear windshield is all glass, theres no frame. The taillights look comically thin.

Interior: Typical BMW. iDrive 8 hate it/love it, it's here to stay. Everything is high quality with very little hard/cheap plastic, which IMO shouldn't even be a thing at this price point especially when the BMW XM is its own model - it shouldn't feel like re-used parts from other BMW SAV's. The rear seats? COMFORTABLE. Like 7er comfortable.

Unfortunately, overall the XM is not unique enough for its price tag. When you sit in it and drive, it feels like any other the other BMW SAV's. That's not a bad thing because they drive great, but you have a hard time trying to justify the price tag. I have zero interest in the G Wagen and I think it's an absurd car but the G Wagen is unique enough where it doesn't look or drive like any other Mercedes in the line up. The BMW XM is the G Wagen for BMW enthusiasts.
