X7 engine fire

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Holy crap... saw this posted on Facebook. Owner says his brand new 2021 X7 (384 miles) "had an engine fire that happened out of nowhere while driving." No information on the accuracy of the statement, but the video in this link and pics are rather dramatic.

Wow that's sad. That's very low mileage hopefully it's not a defect across multiple vehicles.

I think with a little time and my power buffer, I could buff most those smudges off.

BMW will probably still sell it as a CPO.

You worried about the hood? I am worried about the active grill shutters.

Looks drivable.

Maybe able to sell it for its unique build.

On a more serious note, what if the engine had low oil or something crazy that the dealer did wrong on delivery? I don't think anyone would be worried about a potential fire at the start of a cars life. Also, do you guys think this might be due to the hybrid system? It could have shorted or something due to an improper install during build.

I sure hope we get updates on this…I am really interested to see how BMW handles this. Simply from a customer service standpoint and good relations, if it was me, I'd replace the vehicle for the owner without question

Save the brakes. Looks like msport. Those and the tires are definitely short right now.
Could also find a home for the black 752 wheels

The windshield tint is a bit dark for my taste though

Lucky it caught fire in an open area and not in someone's garage or driveway!

Hopefully no one go hurt. Sucks to see an X7 in such condition but there's thousands of them on the road and can be replaced. Can't replace family.

Yes hopefully everyone ok. That's what's most important. But definitely a shame on such a nice brand new X7.

There is a video someone shared mentioning that there has been a problem with a batch of defect Samsung battery used for the hybrid system causing engine fire, not sure if that includes the mild hybrid system in X7. Would love to hear what BMW response on this is and whether there is a recall. This is giving me anxiety with driving this vehicle.

That's what I was wondering when I saw it. It's not an M50i from the pics, and I believe the hybrid is only in the 40i version, so I was thinking the 48V system might be the culprit with enough energy to start a fire. But who knows :

Didn't want to panic anyone either but since you said it…

I wonder if a rodent got in and caused a short in the 48V system.
