I had the ERG valve cooler recall for my X5 35d which may be related to that article. It was a potential glycol leak in the module that would cause the soot to accumulate and could potentially lead to a fire. The recall was just to inspect for any soot in the area, and clean and replace with a like unit if it did exist (i.e. they didn't develop a real fix). It looks like it only affected the N47 and N57 engines, though.

Your garage is Sheet-rocked with Water Board / Fire Board to keep a garage fire contained and from spreading quickly

Modern smoke and CO2 detectors (working together) are all you really need to catch a fire from its onset

Make sure you have both installed in your garage and you'll be alerted well in advance

Yep.

Plus standard 1/2 inch drywall is fire rated for 30 minutes.

You would think that the car being driven 384 miles and being a x7, that the recall issue would have been fixed prior to the build finishing. Hopefully there is another factor such as rodents and hopefully not a new vehicle that was built incorrectly after the recall.

Thanks great advice. I was however informed that smoke detectors shouldn't go in a garage. False positives from car exhausted not sure if this is your experience.

I guess that makes sense if you let the car idle inside for to long

Otherwise it's a non issue

What happened to all of the pictures? Also, I can't view that Facebook page.

Also, for the poster that wanted some type of sensor, I use this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0872ZWV8X...v_ov_lig_dp_it

It has an alarm function that will trip on a certain temperature or humidity. It's mainly used for wine rooms, but it can be used anywhere for anything. They have a multi-room sensor as well.

Yeah, pics disappeared for me too. Might be some hotlinking thing with Facebook. I uploaded them again as attachments here.

I think you have to be a member of the BMW X7 Owners Club facebook group to watch the video or see the post itself.

Was the car that burned a B58? If so, what is located in the front area of the engine bay towards the driver’s side? I’m just curious.

Yes it was a 40i so the B58. It's 2021 so it has the 48V mild hybrid system.

I don't have a 2021 so not sure what exactly is in the front driver side area. I had a loner X5 for a couple weeks. it was a 2021 with the mild hybrid and when I looked under the hood, there were some thick purple wires (for the 48V system I'm guessing) and what looked like some AC stuff. I read that the R1234 refrigerant is flammable.

I was thinking the flames shooting out the front driver side in the video may be the pressurized refrigerant shooting out. It only lasted a few seconds in the video.
But that doesn't explain what caused the initial blaze.

Ok. 48 Volts is a lot more susceptible to arcing. It also explains why the hood completely burned away as a petroleum fire takes a long time to burn through aluminum. That intense, concentrated heat are hallmarks of a lithium fire.

If I were to guess, the 48 Volt lithium battery was the culprit. I wish I can see the video. Can anyone post it here?

Mercedes is having major issues with their mild-hybrid system. I think Audi is one of the few manufacturers that hasn’t reported a lot of issues with their 48 Volt system. At least not yet.

By the way, if I was the insurance company for the owner, I would go after BMW. They would win any reimbursement fight very easily.
