Assisted Driving - nag nag nag

I was under the impression that Assisted Driving used a camera system to detect your eyes? Mine incessantly asks me to grab the wheel, around every 5 or 6 seconds. I read in a post that someone said to raise the wheel and tried that. I've tried it all the way up, all the way down, everywhere in between.... still touch the wheel nagging. Is there any sort of diagram as to the height/distance required to get this to work right? 5-6 seconds isn't enough time to be worth anything, and I need this for long highway driving.

That's only in Assisted Driving Plus mode. In "standard" you still have to hold the wheel.

Is yours 2023 with iDrive8?
If it is, I have a module to fix that first world problem.

What is the fix. I’m curious. Will it work with a 2024? I’ve given back mine to the dealer until my new XM label comes in.

It’s a module installed inside the steering wheel to replace the steering touch module.
Supposedly iDrive8.5 raised the need to touch the steering wheel at higher speed than the predecessor’s. I haven’t drive any iDrive8.5 with DAP+ yet, I may be wrong.
But, I have this module on my ‘21 G05 X5 and ‘23 G09 XM.
Pretty useful for long drive.
I have some in stock currently.

Mine is 5-6 seconds... It's terribly annoying and makes the feature worthless.

I’ve mentioned this before in a different thread, but a while back there was a guy on YouTube that crammed a small orange 🍊 into the top right section of the steering wheel and it fooled the system into thinking it was a hand on the wheel. The guy drove like 40 miles up the PCH and never once did he get a warning to touch the wheel.

This was an iDrive 7 vehicle so they may have deleted this hack, but it may be worth a fun try.

I'm very confused by the product designations here. Don't we all (XM owners) have Driver Assistance Pro? And that has 2 "methods" of assistance", either "Distance Control" or "Driver Assist"?

What I have found is one level above PRO called " Motorway Assistant"

"Considered the top of the line when it comes to driver assists, the Motorway Assistant includes all the aforementioned features with the special addition of Motorway Travel, without touching the wheel up to 85 mph and Automatic Lane Change by simply looking in the exterior mirror."

Taken from https://www.bmwakron.com/blogs/1468/...sts-explained/

There are four levels of Driver Assistance for BMW, with equipment specifications boasting numerous features in each. Those four various equipment specifications are: Driving Assistant (SA 5AS), Driving Assistant Plus (SA 5AT), Driving Assistant Professional (SA 5AU) and Motorway Assistant (OE 5AX).

The Driving Assistant (SA 5AS) presents a slew of features, all of which are of great aid to today’s drivers. Those include: Collision Warning, Pedestrian and Cyclists Warning with City Braking Function, Road Sign Recognition, Lane Change Warning, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, Rear-end Collision Warning and Exit Warning.

Driving Assistant Plus (SA 5AT) includes all that are within the SA 5AS, plus more. Those added benefits to today’s driver are: Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Steering and Lane Control Assistant Basic (up to 111 mph) and Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go Function (up to 111 mph).

The Driving Assistant Professional (SA 5AU) adds even more when it comes to features that are rooted in driver’s confidence and safety. Those include: Steering and Lane Control Assist (up to 130 mph), Rescue Lane Assistant, Emergency Stop Assistant, Avoidance Assistance, Road Priority Warning, Wrong-Way Assistant, Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection, Crossing Traffic Warning for both front and rear, Lane Change Assistant and Traffic Light Detection with Hold Function.

Considered the top of the line when it comes to driver assists, the Motorway Assistant includes all the aforementioned features with the special addition of Motorway Travel, without touching the wheel up to 85 mph and Automatic Lane Change by simply looking in the exterior mirror.

I've come across and read over a hundred threads on different forums, for all models... everybody is confused. There doesn't seem to be 1 single source of information as to "you have this, and it does this, when you do this and need to do that". I'm new to BMW so maybe those of the dedicated brand followers are used to it, but it's kind of maddening. Also, I will say that the information cluster is terrible at telling you the various features that are enabled/used due to the level of variables and conditions.

My 24 XM label has both 5AU and 5AX on build sheet. I use hands free up to 85mph and look into side mirror to change lanes only when using navigation at same time daily. Having driven BMWs since 2010 features are pretty clear to me as they have been gradually introduced over the years. But if I switched to a different brand I am sure I would have a tough time adjusting also…

Oh I see. For the touch part, I don’t really care. The real annoyance is the one tracking the eye. It keeps nagging me to look at the road even though I’m looking *enough*. I can’t find songs on XM radio without it buzzing to keep the eyes on the road. I’m annoyed enough sometimes to turn the hands free driving off.

MY2023 is less annoying than MY2024 X5 50e though. I hope it’ll be same with my new ‘24 or ‘25 XM

My2023 doesn’t have Motorway assist, only up to 40 mph (traffic jam assist) instead of 85 mph

That only happened to me when I have my hand at 12 o'clock and blocking that camera.
If you don't have your hand there, most likely just need to adjust your steering wheel so you can see that camera with IR.
Yes, it didn't freak out at me easily on '21 G05 X5 compare to this '23 G09 XM.

My IX 50 did this all the time. My XM it’s only happened a few times.

There was a time this weekend where I cocked my head and neck in to the most unfathomable position, and I did not have to touch the wheel at all. I have no idea why this was. A few small status lights, or even a seperate app screen as to the system's availability of features/recognition of safety measures would be so helpful.

The module from r33_RGSport worked like a charm. Makes the system so much better. Install is easy but not for a beginner.
