Ouch!

It really isn't as bad as all that. At least I don't think so...

I'm setting off on a roadtrip tomorrow with 10 hours of driving ahead of me and the family. For the next 10 days it will be varying road types including "the road of 1000 curves". If "the Tank" makes it through all of that unscathed and the wife and kids are happy then it will have been no mean feat! Fingers crossed...

That is just a ridiculous review that reads like it was written by a Range Rover dealership owner. Those Brits.

Nice. I'm interested to hear your feedback after the trip, khai Dow ! One of the reasons I'm buying the X7 is to be a family road trip mobile.

I would too! I just did about 1500 miles round trip in my F15 X5 35d with a third row... Road trips longer than 1 hour with 3 kids is why I'm out looking to get out of it earlier than I planned and into an X7 currently.

Well, after day 1 and around 550 miles and 9 hours of driving we arrived. Sunshine, torrential rain, flooding, hills and so far The tank hasn’t missed a beat. My wife and daughter slept half of the time in the 2nd row as it’s “just so comfortable” and the 3rd row was flat to take the 3 large suitcases. Being able to stow the mini luggage cover and use the one that covers our suitcases is really helpful. The underfloor storage also is really handy for things you want to keep extra secure.

The M50d definitely has more grunt than required for most situations although does sometimes run out of breath at higher speeds when you try to accelerate. It’s surefootedness in the lashing rain was very reassuring, especially on some particularly greasy roads. I disagree with evo on sport plus. It really does make a ticeBke difference especially to the handling and the throttle response.

After 120K we were at 51mpg (mainly in eco pro at around 110km/65mph). By the end of the trip and after a few stops and a few blasts in sport plus we ended at 38mpg.

Per the pic below, after around 70 miles, range was 1101km (680miles).

More day trips to follow with plenty of practicality tests. So far so good.

It's interesting that the author mentioned about the road noise transmitting into the cabin. I felt the X7 should be as quiet as an S class. But I was suprise to find that it isn't.

When I test drove a 40i with 21" wheels I too noticed the road noise. Anyone else has an opinion in this?

I think most people in this forum would disagree as would this article which has already been shared....

Maybe it depends what you’re used to. I’m coming from an active hybrid 5 series with 20” rims. It was relatively quiet but crashed over any imperfections in the road. Now I’m in an X7 diesel with 22” inch rims. Other than spaciousness my first impression of the car was the ride quality. For me, it’s incredible compared to the AH5. As for road noise, in comfort mode the X7 is almost silent in most conditions other than engine noise during hard acceleration. In Sport plus, in a tunnel with the windows down and foot to the floor, it’s noisy in a good way!

The Tank hasn’t disappointed so far. Takes the twisty roads and the highways equally well. Heading up to the Doi Suthep viewpoint was somewhat nervewracking on a single track road with frequent “honk on blind bends” signs in the road and meeting lots of red minivans head on.

Evo not British biased tho their reviews are flavored by their sensibilities vs Amerca’s. They also are not anti big SUV as they have always liked the GL/GLS.

They really just hated this vehicle somehow. I disagree with the styling review but don’t think the handling critique is entirely wrong

Yeah, I’ve read their mag for years and these days mainly the online reviews. Generally a fan of Henry who now does Carfection as well as Harry. That’s why I was surprised at the level of Evo’s dislike. There was definitely some combination of features that just rankled with them - a LOT.

I cross-shopped my X7 with a RR LWB Autobiography - the hybrid version. In many ways I preferred the Rangie, it when it came to practicality? Engine, driving dynamics, equipment levels (and the fact the LR405 is coming to the end of its life) the X7 won. And I’m a Brit, and an LR was my dream car.

Something in the overall philosophy of the X7 M50d just made the rest of the review overly harsh. It is just a review though -I’ll live!

I am also considering the RR Auto but somehow I find the X7 more appealing.

Yeah I say X7 all day right now and then revisit the Range 18 months from now after the new gen has been out and had some kinks sorted through. Having said that the cons of Range ownership will likely remain so it’s just a matter of how much they’ve dialed up the pros
