Paint Defect Advice
After owning my X7 for about 2.5 weeks, I noticed the light hit the edge of the front passenger door weirdly. On closer inspection, the edge of the door is quite rough. This is the only door with this problem. The paint on the outer door surface is perfect, so no way that it could be damage from a parking lot door ding.
I showed it to my dealer. They believe it is a manufacturing defect from the paint booth. Photos have been sent to the BMW regional service rep. The thought is that the paint globules are too large to be fixed by wet sanding and that removing and repainting the door would be the option offered. However, I am concerned that repainting the door will cause potential resale issues down the line. The paint defect is subtle so that it took a while for me to see it (now I notice it all the time, though). No matter what, it's pretty annoying that the quality control is evidently not up to the premium charge BMW commands on the vehicle. Should I have it repaired, leave it alone, or look for some other compensation in terms of extended warranty, etc? |

Based on what you say, if it were me, I'd let the dealer repaint it. They should do a great job of color matching, and with your car new, there should be no problem with the rest of the paint weathered or faded yet. Don't think anybody will ever know, and no issues to resale.
