iPhone digital key

Hi all

I’m loving my X7 50i. Has anyone activated the smartphone digital key? If so how do you do it?

Thanks

Jan

Not available on iPhone. Only android. CarPlay only works with iPhone. Isn't that funny that you can't get all the possibilities unless you carry both Android and iPhone

Our BMW genius told us that currently only works with android phones but not with the iPhone since Apple restricts NFC access.

But you can at least still activate remote start via the iPhone app right? (I remember someone posting about this on another thread)

Yes. Remote start works from the app, but you’ll need your key or digital key to drive once you get in.

I thought the doors are automatically locked when you use remote start from the FOB or the app so you would need the FOB or Digital Key Card to access the X7. I think the real point is an iPhone cannot be used as a key like Android phones, at least until Apple opens up NFC for such uses in future iSO update.

I've heard rumors on other forums about Q1 2019 for iPhone enabling NFC capabilities.

Do you mean 2020? Q1 2019's done already.

Some prediction. 😉 With Apple you really have to wait until they officially announce something like that. The rumor are sometimes correct but more often just rumors.

https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/news/a...-key-standard/

Here's the unreliable source I was referring to.

"A second release of the standard [Digital Key], Release 2.0, is scheduled for the first quarter of 2019..."

@sliu070 I hope you didn't take my reply as a slight toward your post. I've been using Apple products since the original iPhone in 2007 and only use Apple products for my business and I've come to learn that they move at a snails pace with most changes. They probably will eventually support digital access to cars via their iPhones but that requires them to unlock and open up NFC which they have been very reluctant to do. We'll see what happens but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I don't have remote start as an option in the iPhone app. I can remotely start the car using the FOB only.

This board is awesome... thanks for the replies. Guess we’ll have to wait.

Best

I just saw this. Does everyone get a digital key CARD? If you have one you could try this. The guy puts the card between the iphone case and the phone. Not sure how this effects cordless charging.

However I feel like I would use the connivence of the touchless access system if you have it?

I just tried it and could unlock the doors, but it won't start the car when I put the phone+card combo on the charger. If I use the card alone then I can start the car. So that for me kind of defeats the point of using this to not carry keys.

Yeah. That's too bad. Do you have a slim case? I wonder if it would work with a thinner case. I don't have mine yet so I cant try. Do you know if all x7s come with this card? I ordered all packages except for night vision and off road.

Yup, slim enough that the charging still works with the card in the case between the phone and the charger. I've also tried taking the case off completely and stacking the card between the phone and the charger. Seems like the phone over-rides the card.

I just put mine in my wallet in case I forget my keys. Just switched to a Samsung and wanted to try the digital key feature, but turns out the connected app is not available on android in Canada.

Bummer. Hope it will soon for you. Yeah I was trying to think of a time I would use that key card, because I almost always have my purse with me. Can you still lock the car with the key card inside it? You could leave it in the arm rest area and just have it in there for quick trips to get coffee or something. Then I wouldn't have to worry about bringing a purse. I think its great though that they have the key card at all. I don't think a lot of cars have that option.

I suppose you could just put the card in the outer folds of your wallet, and then tap your wallet on the car handle.
