Gen1 B58 turbo replacement question
Hey all,
So yesterday I had my turbo go out on my 2016 340i. Currently a BM3 stage 1. I had it towed to my family owned repair shop. I'm hoping to get some guidance. - Rebuild if possible - OEM with a at cost discount on parts, turbo alone is still 3k+ - A stage 1 pure turbo kit which was approx 2500. I'm exploring a rebuild but the shop I called didn't seem too confident that it was possible so I'm exploring a few options. The pure kit seems nice but the family shop while a specialist bmw shop doesn't typically do aftermarket items. So wouldn't be willing to dive into fabrication, major turning. I also rather stay away from ebay turbos and unknown brands. My question is would the pure kit make sense for me? Are there options I'm not considering like just a turbo only replacement? Also I'm in California so if I go aftermarket am I doomed to struggle with smog? In all if I get gains cool but to be honest I just want to get my car back. I'm prepared to go the OEM route if that ends up being the way to go. |

I would go with Pure, it's going to be the most reliable option

Replacing with a Pure 800 cast or Dynamic AutoWerx is as simple to swap as OEM, as there’s no fabrication involved. I’d recommend DAW over Pure.

Yes, the install is the same as stock. its a direct fit with no modification required, also no additional tuning

If the concern is cost and not wanting to tune, I'm sure it would be fairly easy to find a stock used turbo |

I installed a DAW Ultraflow in my garage on jack stands. It's completely doable by non-mechanics. With all the resources we have in this community you can be very well versed in just about any scenario that might pop up during the install. It took me far longer to do it than it would have taken a mechanic (about 7 hours) but I learned a helluva lot in the process and saved a significant amount of money as well. The DAW product is fantastic with excellent support from the owner Shawn so that's the direction I would recommend you go in. However, if you aren't going to upgrade your fueling or your tune to take advantage of the new higher flowing turbo then your best bet would be just to get a lightly used OEM one from someone who is upgrading.

I picked up a DAW flowmax 2.5+ from Mike at extreme power hous on black Friday and a dorch ds25 at the same time. I tuned through Odin Tuned on the mhd platform and it has been incredible.
He also works with bm3 You will make a clean and reliable 600+ whp which is more than enough for most people. I installed the turbo and pump myself and as long as you can follow.steps, it's fairly easy. |

I'm looking for a target of 650-675whp... I want to max the stock bottom end. Was this 600+whp setup done without any additional fueling (i.e., port injection)? Does this DAW turbo require any additional fabrication (i.e. modded downpipe, charge pipes, intake, aftermarket exhaust manifold)? I would like to not have to modify any of that stuff as I have purchased some things already and don't want to toss them because different mounting location for the turbo. EDIT--- ...sorry I went to their website, as I should have in the first place... They answered all of my questions, except fueling. Do we need port injection to hit the 650whp mark? Or would the Dorch 2.5 handle 650whp? Last edited by sigterm2.0; 04-19-2024 at 05:51 PM.. |

I'm not a tuner but I think you'll be on (or over) the limit of what the stock injectors can supply at 650whp. The dorch 2.5 won't be struggling. So yes either PI or bigger injectors. It's interesting that you wanna push the bottom end. Are your future goals to build a motor ultimately so you're not overly worried about damaging your current one? I'd also be mindful of killing the trans with higher torque levels. The solution is a pure which runs about $10k I think. Please take what I'm saying with a pinch of salt I'm really not qualified to give advice. |

Not to hijack the OP's thread but yeah... The ultimate goal for the car is 1000+whp, but that's down the road. This is my first build on the BMW platform, so I'm still learning the little specifics about it. I'm very impressed so far by the B58. Its strength and efficiency from the factory are rather amazing.
But I have a tentative map of my own "stages" for how I would like to achieve that goal. Generally speaking I'll hit 650whp on the stock internals while I'm building the second engine. The idea is to get the most out of any parts I do buy, making sure that if at all possible, I get parts that will work for the end goal as well so I can minimize the repurchasing parts. Building a BMW ain't cheap! No more $10,000 Honda builds. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 |
