How come it was petrol instead of diesel?

It is. On the battlefield for instance in the Ardennes conflict when re-fuelling often in a hurry, spilling oily diesel around would cause a skating rink and slow tank crews and re fuellers down making a slippery mess, petrol being cleaner and causing much less smoke from exhaust giving positions away was preferred.

As ferocious as German tanks were in WW2, these things were so unreliable especially compared to M4 Shermans and the T-34 (which also had some reliability issues at first).

There's so many accounts of P-47s lighting up abandoned German tanks because they just didn't work.
