Car and Drive: 2019 BMW X7 40i vs. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com 2019 BMW X7 vs. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class: Which Decadent Full-Size Luxury SUV Does It Better? A battle of luxurious German three-row SUVs that's been 13 years in the making. Summary: X7 wins because of agility, noise levels, engine but not surprising GLS is bigger inside. GLS better skid pad and braking, but it's on summer tires. |

I thought that was one of the better write ups by Car and Driver. To be fair, the summer tires on the GLS likely made it a bit louder as well.

Wait. An article about the X7 without the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth over its grille?
It's a new year's miracle! |

Such a dry and unemotional comparison that I didn't enjoy reading it.

I thought the write up was pretty good. I love the x7 and I'm coming from a GLS450. The x7 is just a better, more fun driving vehicle. And, looks a whole lot better!

I did my choise once I looked to GLS upholstery. Terrible quality of upholstery itself and stitches. Even Toyota looking better.

Agree, poor writing and boring as hell. Agree with the conclusions.

After test driving the 2020 GLS with leather interior, I decided to cancel my placed order and bought the X7. Too much plastic feel in GLS, the electronic parking brake has a plastic feel. Lower dashboard, doors all feel cheap. I'm not spending 100K on something that doesn't even match E-Class, forget about S-Class. Mercedes should stop calling GLS, S-Class of SUV's and rename is back to GL.
Me and my better half are very happy with X7 especially after driving GL/GLS for last 6 yrs. Apart from the drivability factor, small but convenient features in X7 makes everyday drive a pleasure. |

I agree with others' observations here. The GLS, and frankly most Mercs, have visibly more plastic in their cabins than comparable BMWs.
Personally I find the Merc handsome but somewhat boring, especially from the side. The Bimmer's more angular styling looks really nice and modern. It'll turn more heads at Costco.

I'm glad the goggles are coming off and people start seeing the lack quality (materials) are found in all current Mercedes (excl. S Class). I'm not saying it's not a quality cabin, but people look at the curvy dash and automatically think it's a high quality interior - it's not. BMWs have the opposite effect where the design may be boring but that quality is there, even in the 3er.

For people complain about interior quality on merc I'm sure you can just spec it up, no?

Yes but I think you're wandering into Designo territory where as with the X7, you're ok staying with the stock options and not having to really get into the Individual program while still getting a great interior. I haven't looked at the Mercedes product/ordering guide so I'm not 100% sure.

I had a fully loaded 2020 GLE 450 on order before canceling it and buying the X7 so I have knowledge of what options are available. There is not a designo seat option for either the 2020 GLE or 2020 GLS. The quality of the GLE/GLS interior isn't bad but it's a bit underwhelming compared to the X7 (IMO and many others). The X7 interior looks more premium as many reviews point out.

While I am no tire expert, I don't think it is as simple as that as there are so many other variables involved when it comes to how loud a tire is (or more specifically what you hear inside your car). For example, summer tires are a soft tire compound when used in the correct temperature range (i.e. summer), but turn to rocks in the witer when it gets cold (and are louder). Winter tire compounds are softer in the winter (to aid with winter traction), but wear very fast in the summer due to the special winter compound (also adding to more noise). Other variables affecting how noisy a tire is (or what can be heard) is the brand, age and tread depth of the tire, or how much sound insulation is in the car......

I believe people "spec up" $100k car interiors all the time. The GLS450 is a $76k car so if you're at $100k you already did a ton of "spec'ing up" to make it $100k unless you're starting with a GLS580. People "up spec" the interior on a $100k+ M5 so why not on a Benz?
